$2,500 Oil Change!

Just before Christmas I took my car in for an oil change, no surprises. A week later I received an email from the dealership, BMW of Schereville IN, informing me:

Recommended maintenance - Remove and replace all 4 turbo coolant lines + vent pipe; $2,411.86!

The car (2012 550iX) has 83,000 miles on it and running just fine. Three questions:

1. Why do I need this service done?

2. I thought the CCP covered this?

3. Anyone else had this service recommendation done?

^ If this is considered regularly scheduled maintenance, CPO will not cover it.

The coolant lines on the N63 tend to leak where the rubber meets the hard line. We see those leaking on just about every N63 we check for it, my guess is that is why they quoted them.

If you ignore it, it will eventually get worse and worse until they really leak and disable the car.

Wow, sorry to hear that. Have you tried getting second opinion at your local INDY shop?
Note to myseft: avoid N63 engines as all costs

I have a 4 year extended warranty with Zurich. So far Zurich have been good at covering failed parts. However, I doubt they will pay for maintenance on these parts until there is a an actual failure?

Thru CPO or aftermarket warranty? I was told when I bought mine from the dealer that once the factory warranty expires (4yr/50K), the free maintenance program also expires. It's the one thing CPO doesn't cover. I wasn't offered any extended maint. program, if I was, I might have opted-in.

Sounds like this friendly notice the OP received is "insurance" for BMW to waive coverage on any failed components should the OP not take action on this preventive maint. notice.

I purchased an additional 5 years of coverage on the car from the dealer as an option on top of the CPO just in case. I don't remember how much I paid but I wanted to make sure I didn't have to pay for anything later

Aren't the turbo cooling lines on top of the engine? Besides the 3 hoses that connect to the Y vent pipe? I wouldn't pay for that. I would just buy the hose from OReilly's and do it myself.

The dealer quoted $97 for the vent pipes and y connector. ECS tuning has it for $49

I got quoted for the crank case vent lines 1200$ to fix, because my 550 was not under the extended warranty for them. My cheap ass said nah lol and just 2 weeks ago I got in the mail that they have extended the warranty on the vent lines up to 100k miles !! so check if you car falls in that, also an Indy shop can replace the coolant lines for the turbos for cheap, shit even you might be able to do it yourself.

I fail to see how a job that requires the alternator and potentially both turbos to be removed from the engine to carry out qualifies for "easy DIY" or "just buy from o'reillys" These hoses are complex form cast rubber with a tapering diameter from one end to the other.. Bulk tubing isn't going to get the job done.

This job pays for ~10hrs. Cost wise the dealer is right on the money.

I'm all for DIY, but this is a fairly high level job.

Good advice "Stück"; there is no way I am going to try doing this job myself. Still talking to the dealership to see if my extended warranty (with Zurich) covers this or if I have to wait for an actual failure before it does.

In the shop now to find out if my extended warranty (with Zurich) covers the work. Apparently Zurich send someone out to inspect the failure before authorizing repair. Fingers crossed they do!
