Service records? Carfax/autocheck records? Man, I love my car but that seems like a gamble.

Well you 535 guys have a nice data point for longevity! Hope that owner didn't have to put too much into the car for the miles.

Are you a mechanic? It's always a gamble to buy a car like that as something "small" can end up costing half of what you paid for for the car. It's not typically the car that breaks the bank, but the maintenance and upkeep. I have an E39 with over 200K miles, but when I bought it I also purchased a 4 year warranty. In my experience BMWs with higher mileage are ticking timebombs. It's not the "if", but the "when" will it strike.

Service history actually looks pretty good. I'd recommend calling your local dealer with the VIN to see what the open recall is.
Maybe you could check with the seller could take it in for the recall and have a quick dealer inspection performed simultaneously?

I thought I had a lot of miles at ~72K! I guess this speaks volumes to the reliability of the I6. Just beware of wearable items with that mileage, brakes and suspension components come to mind. As does the "lifetime" transmission fluid.

You're in SoCal.... Easy-peasy. At one point I was commuting 150ish miles a work day. Lived in Rialto (yeah, I know...) and worked at LAX. Did that for 5 years.

It's always a gamble after 100K miles. If you get an aftermarket warranty, then go for it.

I drive a 100 miles a day, five days a week, every week in the same car. Plus any additional miles in the weekend. End up doing roughly about 29-30K miles a year. It adds up pretty quick.

How many miles do you plan to add to this car a year or the total time you will keep it? We bought my dads five with 115k and added 8k a year till it started playing up at 168k It had full bmw dealer service history

If none of those things that I mentioned were replaced or done then I would not even go for it. I would have to assume the leather is all beat up, control knobs etc too. Car just won't drive like a BMW with that much mileage and no refresh.

A guy on other thread ( http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1352982 ) stated " i drive my cars a lot (already have about 58k on this one and not even a year yet)". How does this guy drive?

A 535i is a pretty solid car, depending on the driver though, but 179,000 miles is a lot. I would guarantee that things are going to start breaking and unless you have your own tools and shop, I would pass.
