535i N55 Preventative maintenance items advice
Hi all
I just bought a 2013 BMW 535i for my son. I myself have a 535d and love the way they drive but diesels are too rare and not many people know how to work on them. I am fortunate enough to be able to do most of it myself. I was wondering for the 535i what would be the common items that you would replace or would fail? I have made a list and already bought most of these items and would like to ask for help on if I am missing anything. Here is the list: 1. All aluminum water pump. The plastic ones I know often fail 2. Thermostat 3. Engine mounts 4. Transmission mount 5. BMW Coolant for coolant flush 6. Differential plug 7. Differential fluid (OEM BMW) 8. Oil filter housing gasket 9. Coolant flange (close to oil filter housing) - I ordered billet aluminum 10. Bosch Spark plugs 11. Ignition Coils 12. Oil filter (OEM) 13. Intake manifold gasket set. 14. Air filter (OEM) 15. N55 Valve cover and gasket 16. Valvetronic Actuator seal and hardware 17. Belt accessory drive belt kit ( idler pulleys, tensioner, belt) 18. High pressure fuel pump 19. Zimmerman brake kit (front and rear) with Akebono pads and Pentosin brake fluid 20. Windshield cowling cover 21. FTP full charge pipes and boost pipe kit 22. Oil Mobil 1 0W-40 is what I have always used I guess I should check to see what you guys run. I am debating whether or not to switch out the front control arm bushings .. no shaking right now at 107K miles. I'll look at them closely when I get up close. Also the flex disc seems ok but may change it out. Suspension seems very solid. On the cosmetic side: 1. The front cowling over the windshield wipers are breaking down. I had to change it on my 535d also 2. AC buttons are worn 3. front center vents broken 4. Start stop button worn 5. Door handle is sticky and nasty 6. Cup holder is destroyed 7. Rear vents broken Am I missing anything guys? If anyone can recommend a decent detailer in Austin Texas, please let me know. I can do it myself also but don't have a lot of time to do it all. Thanks! |

As mentioned, trans service is mandatory. Also look at the differential mounts as they are likely cracking. Check the guibo as well, good chance it's getting bad if not there already and you're already doing the trans mounts.

I cleaned mine off really well with electrical cleaner and replaced the seals. I checked the function while they were out by connecting a battery and they worked great. In my experience, don't think they will really need to be changed out as preventative maintenance. If you see codes coming up, definitely swap out the offender!

That is a great list of things to look out for in regard to the N55, I have a small list ready of my own, and I know even more what to look for and keep an eye on, it's my first BMW ever, and I enjoy the wealth of info on this website! Very noted on the info for the awesome 8spd Transmission!
