BMW 5 Series Parking Assist Disaster :)

Saw this on the news today.

http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/vi...fail.wpbf.html

So much for too much automation and too much dependence on cars to do simple tasks for you.

this is not a parking assist fail. this is an idiot fail. the system is only for parallel parking. this person was parking in a normal spot, so parking assist wouldnt even enable. second point, and the most important point, is that even if you were using parking assist, the car does not accelerate on its own. you have to push the gas/brake. the car does not have the ability to accelerate on its on. so no, this is not a parking assist fail. this is a stupid driver who made a bad mistake and is trying to blame the car.

This guy can sue BMW if he wants, but he will fail because in manuals is writen that this system does not relive the driver of his responsibility, but i think this guy did not read the manuals or he tried getting money from BMW or his insurance company.

The guy just wanted somebody to blame for HIS mistake. He knew what he did, and that it was his fault.

Now that is what I call a tight parking space.

Lol. Agree. Exactly my thoughts. Driver most likely messed up and is blaming it on the car. Simple parking job, but no...let the car do it and then mess it up yourself.

Yep, definite driver error, trying to pass it onto BMW. Good luck with that.

This does not look like a parking assist vehicle...

...more like careless driving/child endangerment.

It not always easy to see, but it sits in the side marker housing like so...

...plus don't parking assist cars come with surround view?

Haha what a dumbass, and he's trying to blame BMW when he must have squeezed the gas pedal on accident.
Yes that does NOT look like a car that has the feature. In order to have parking assistant, you MUST get that 'camera package' which has the cameras in the front bumper in front of the wheel, and those side markers have the sensors as described, which this car does not appear to have..

Operator error, plain and simple. Forgot the brake pedal is the one on the left.

Hey guys I know this is an old thread (came across it while researching if the car will stop itself while reversing or do I have to slam on brakes---all the videos I have seen show the car stopping and accelerating on its own---but my car backs up FAST and doesn't stop), just playing Devil's Advocate here, but I have Parking Assistant, but I DO NOT have the Side/Top View Camera package.

I too have park assist. It only helps you when parallel parking and when used, it does not control the gas nor the brake; only the steering wheel. The driver still controls the gas and brake pedals respectively.

The park assist does not automatically come with top and side view camera; it is a separate package.

The latest Park Assist (from Sep 2014 LCI editions for F10) does come with automatic acceleration and braking, i.e. do nothing, the car does it all.

I have this in my F10 and it works like a charm. No need to control brake, accelerator or steering - only nerves !

The car in the video is clearly a preCLI model for the following reasons:

1. The rims
2. The headlight assembly has the LED blinkers.

So no, this car wouldn't be able to accelerate on its own. Also, the LCI model would've stopped on its own because the sensors would be beeping like mad since it was so close to the other car. It surely wouldn't run it over.
