Pre LCI (non M-Sport) paddle shift retro fit

I changed my boring non M-Sport steering wheel to a 2014 F30 M-Sport. If you don't care about the paddles then its a direct swap, no coding and splicing of wires. It has that sportier look and thicker feel. All buttons works. PLUG N PLAY!!!

Now, my 2012 F10 did not come with the paddle shift so I need to code it. I want to reach out to any member who successfully done the paddle shift conversion on a pre-LCI, non-Msport, non-paddle shift car.

Looks much better. I've been wanting to do this myself, but didnt know F30 steering wheels fit F10s.

Would you mind sharing where you got the wheel and airbag?

Also to the OP. I sold an Msport steering wheel to a member that had the same wheel as yours with no paddles and he had a member code the paddles to work for him.

I think the member name was @Mwpos

I did do the coding on Evolve's retrofit with advice and backup from Shawn. Here's the general procedue to enable paddle-shift functionaility and S1, S2...S7 gear indications on the cluster:
- Add Paddle Shifter Functionality for retrofit Sport Paddles
FA (VO) Replace 205 with 2TB.
Code new FA in ECUs ICM, EGS, GWS, and SZL

This is the high-level procedure. There are some underlying details which are equally clear and well-documented.

For those considering this, aren't the airbags in Europe single stage where in the US they are dual stage?

I think that's right, but it seems like you can just get a US spec wheel.

Correct, I was just cautioning those that might consider a used setup on ebay coming from Europe. Need to do your homework to make sure you don't get an airbag that is unusable for a US car.

By the way, another item to share is that shipping airbags is extremely difficult in the US. They are considered hazardous materials.

OP, are you sure that you installed an F30 steering wheel?

I tried to do the swap yesterday with my daughter's F30 sport wheel and the little
mount that the steering wheel goes on is bigger on the F30 than it is on the F10.

I couldn't install the F10 steering wheel onto the F30 because of that.
I'm assuimg your F30 steering wheel was loose fitting when you installed it on your F10 correct?

MWPos, thanks for enligthening us with this retro fit. I would like to go to SoCal and meet other F10 members, hoping that you can free up some of your time to correctly code my car.

Thanks

Yes, euro spec is a single stage inflator and US Spec is dual. Here is the correct PN: 32307845798 (US Spec). M Sport airbag are the same on F10 (LCI), F20, F30, F12, F13, etc.

Cheapest ive seen is ebay at $500 with shipping and HAZMAT fees.

Yes, Sir its a F30 steering wheel (possibly a Euro spec bec it came from Germany). I did a "best offer" from this guy, ebay link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-BMW-M-le...3D261391914586

The spline and center bolt fits perfect. I hate to hear that there are manufacturing versions for these steering wheel. BLUF, my set-up is a F30 steering wheel from Germany mated with a US spec airbag (dual inflator) PN: 32307845798. Thanks

Evolve did his own retrofit...I never saw any work that he did before he brought the car to me for coding so I apologize, but I cannot offer an intelligent answer to your question. His car does not have the lane departure warning system.

And when you have your schedule for a trip to San Diego, send me a PM and I will for sure take care of any coding you need.

Soooo ... if I wanted to swap in carbon fibre instead of the fake alloy strip in the LCI steering wheel then do I need to remove the centre airbag pod to do that or is it simply removing a screw at the back of the steering wheel and that strip pops out?

i think its better to remove the whole steering wheel in order to replace trim. its way easier. you can do these steps in 5 mins!

steps:
1. disconnect battery (-) negative terminal
2. follow this video for airbag removal. same concept on the LCI Msport steering wheel
3. remove center bolt
4. remove steering wheel

Are they the same diameter, or are the one from the f30 a little smaller?

no fitment issues with mine. Same diameter!

When I bought mine from ebay (seller is from Germany), the description stated F30 http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-BMW-M-le...3D261391914586.

I did stated that my car is a 2012 F10 to the ebay seller. He probably followed that. To be safe, just stick to the F10 steering wheel. Same price.

I was just asking because in the f30 that m-sport wheel feels smaller than the wheel in my f10.

I apologize I misunderstood your question. Yeah you are right. The overall steering wheel diameter feels a lot smaller. It needs to be compared side-by-side.

What people miss out on in the swap guides is the yellow airbag cable. The danger is that you keep thinking it needs a proper pull. By doing that, you risk damaging the airbag cable.

Take a very close look at the connector while in the socket. There are two, tiny clips you will have to release by lifting the plastic cover plate carefully away from the socket. The rest is self-explanatory

I'm trying to find a steering wheel for my 2011 F10...I need one that's heated, has ACC buttons and lane deviance vibration...

I've found one that's for the X5 F15, anyone know if that'll work?
Where do other people look? Not much for sale with the above specs on Ebay...
