For this to happen in a $60k+ luxury car, it is unacceptable. All I can say is good luck with us all

Any insight on what the dealership did to fix it would be great.

Thanks.

We are in the same boat it seems... Have you checked out this thread? My wife and I went through the Lemon Law process last year about this very time, bought a nearly identical vehicle since this issue does not seem to impact all 550's, but as of this morning we have the same issue as with the previous 550xi.

Any time a new design comes to market, there are issues that just cannot be caught even with stringent testing. However, for an issue like this one to persist for over one year with apparently no fix identified is unacceptable.

Ya that's pretty much what I did. They replaced a bunch of stuff, (likely the same as previous posts here) and it has not happened since. Possible that BMW has finally figured out the problem.

Frankly, I'm not optimistic... I take the car in tomorrow afternoon (no repeat of the issue as of yet). When I spoke with the SA last week, he said "...there are about 50 things that can cause this indication to come up". I asked whether they had finally determined what caused the previous issue we saw and he basically ducked the question.

Quick update... we got the 550xi back on Friday, and they replaced all 8 injectors. Through testing, they found that we had three injectors that were sticking open in certain situations. Seems odd, but... So far, so good following the repair. Time will tell, I suppose.

I had the same error, first thing in the morning, about 1 week ago.

I backed out of my driveway, put the car in drive, and the error came up and the car went to limp mode. I couldn't put it in reverse to pull back into the driveway, so I went around the block and pulled back into the driveway. I turned the car off, then back on, the problem cleared... I haven't seen it since.

I got this message all last week. Took it into the dealership and found nothing wrong, reset the codes.

The very next morning, I got the warning again.

Any dealer in S. Cal having success diagnosing this?? Any references would be appreciated.

Mine is a 2011 550I M-Sport with 49,500 miles.

40k miles and just got drivetrain malfunction plus engine light came on. Car is barely drivable. Going to BMW at 7:30am.

UPDATE:

BMW replacing the high pressure fuel pump and car seems to be OK. They also reprogrammed the whole car.

Lost aftermarket 6NR option and Folding Mirrors....Need to go back and get these reprogrammed...

Have you brought it into the dealership and had them do their part replacements yet?

This just happened to me today, I have a 2011 550i with just over 40,000 miles. I was accelerating and in the mid 80's the drivetrain malfunction light came on. I was able to make it home, but since nothing is open today, I will call bmw to come pick up my car tomorrow. Now whenever I start the car it rumbles more before turning over, and the check engine light is now on. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Update: They are replacing the high pressure fuel pump.

What type of driving were you doing when light came on?

Balls to the wall, sport plus in sport transmission starting in M1 and red line every gear nothing out of the ordinary. Lol

Raced the Heffner Audi R8 twin turbo at atco raceway and beat him and then had to leave because engine light was on. spent $275 on the event and got only three runs before I had to leave.

The dealership just called and said that both mass air flow sensors had to be replaced....They claim that was what threw the code.

Ill let you know how the car is when I get it back tomorrow or the next.

All I can say is wow....the car felt slow ever since they changed the high pressure fuel pump two weeks ago. the drivetrain malfunction this time pointed to the MAF sensors which BMW replaced. The car feels the best it has ever felt. Its got the peppy feel I was once used to. im very happy with the car right now, lets see if the drivetrain malfunction error doesnt come back. only time will tell.

My 2012 550i is doing the same thing. It did it at 22,000 miles, and they replaced on fuel injector. Now, at 23,000 same thing. I was headed back from vacation and it started. I pulled over and restarted the car. It was fine. Then, two days later, some thing. However, now I have the check engine light on and the car doesn't want to run. Have a wait a week to get it in the dealer.

My 2011 535i xdrive just did it and started running rough. After turning the car off and on a few times it went off (the check engine light) I took it to the dealer and they kept the car and said it's my high pressure fuel pump. Smdh. I only have 51,000 miles on her.
