As I read the specs, the 535d is 150lbs. lighter than the 535i. I am probably wrong.

love to know if 535d is actually lighter... BTW: most dealers here in so-cal are discounting $7-8k off msrp. verified and published on any autotrader.com search

The Rush of Power

This is my second diesel, coming to a 2014 535d xDrive from an X5 35d. I don't need/want an SUV anymore, and own a 2011 e92 M3 which I get to drive in the summer. What I enjoy about the 535d is enormous rush of power under hard acceleration, there simply is nothing like it. My commute involves a drive home through a canyon where I experience 2 500 feet of elevation gain to get to my home at 7 000 feet above sea level. Driving up that canyon, whether in my X5 or my new 535d is always a revelation. That smooth rush of freight train pulling power never ceases to amaze me. If more potential BMW customers did a real test drive, they would need no convincing that these new diesels are nothing short of brilliant. I insisted on a test drive along the route of my commute and was immediately sold on the power delivery of the car. I am a diesel evangelist to my car guy and car girl friends but do reign myself in at times as some people can't get it, until they drive the diesel. I can also claim an unbiased position as I own what is perhaps one of the last truly great normally aspirated engines in the M3. This said, I would not be averse to owning a lightweight diesel electric vehicle for short trips (bring back the Isetta shape with an 800cc turbo diesel with a primary electric motor and I would buy it sight unseen).

^I bet you'd love the "real" 535d that we got in Europe with 313 hp (metric HP that is), or even better the M550xd with 381 hp.

Is this exclusive to diesels? Is there any ecocredit, and if not, what is the motivation? Is the car selling poorly. I am in Salt Lake City and my dealer says they are selling well and there is no discount over the 535i, which is still less expensive here.

not sure on the take rate on the 535d; there are quite a few dealers here offering them at $7-8k off msrp: here's a link to a search i did: i'm tired of leasing; so looking to buy new; just not sure if i should stay with my 535i or not;(my 535i is currently posted for lease assumption) so many more mods available on N55.... can you even tune the "535d"..? (DP, exhaust, etc)

Just ordered a 535d from a dealer in So Cal, $8k off MSRP, to replace my wife's is250, now the wait... We test drove it twice. We loved the power (Tq) and she'll appreciate not having to fill up as often. She wanted a plush mobile with good fuel economy.

How much did you end up paying? And if it's a lease, pls give us some details.

The MSRP was $69,700, I got it for $61,635, $3k under invoice. It's not a lease, found a post on bimmerfest (Sticky: ) in f10 section. It's only good for Cali residents, jon shafer from Santa Barbara BMW. The wait is going to kill me, I'm already calling everyday to find out the week it'll be built...

Tons of 2014 BMW 535d pics here, in metallic white too. Apparently gives it a bit of a slight shimmer over the regular Alpine White

It's really invoice minus the $2500 in BMW credits currently available, plus a few hundred goodwill dollars. Board sponsor David Aviles should be able to easily match that and have the car shipped to your local dealer for a small fee.

I would really appreciate it if some of you diesel owners could chime in on the Auto Start Stop problem I'm having with my 535d. Wondering on people's experience with Auto Start-Stop in a diesel vs gasoline vehicle.

Please and thank you.

Just placed an order for a 535d x-drive. Very eager to receive the car this summer and also excited to find this thread.

I did an insane amount of research, test drove several cars to better understand the dynamic handling package, and even built a dynamic spreadsheet (link here) to get adjusted lease quotes depending on the checked features of the build.

This forum was immensely helpful and now I hope I can be even a fraction as helpful to others who are going through the same process now.

Thanks, all!

I have a 530d, which is what you guys get badged as a 535d for some reason. I've no idea why, our 535d is 306bhp and has two turbos.

Anyway - I struggle to understand why you guys are so keen on the 535d? Don't get me wrong, I like mine - the engine is great, the performance is strong and it pays dividends at the pump. But then at the pump our diesel and gasoline costs $9 a gallon not $4 a gallon.

I'd have been all over the 535i instead if I had the choice - I didn't because so strong is the market for diesel here they are almost impossible to find on the used market, so I went with a 530d. I'm happy, but I'd have been happier in a 535i in a world where gas was cheaper!

In NY, the price of diesel will be pretty much on par with super unleaded shortly and continue through the summer and until the temps start dropping and the demand for heating oil goes back up. My 2011 535i would get me 27mpg AT BEST with highway driving and around 22mpg mixed. I'm getting 35mpg right now with my diesel and have gotten 50mph on a few runs.... so why do I like my diesel? I go to the gas station half as often and my monthly fuel bill is less.

Just filled up at my local Shell station Sunday -- Diesel is now cheaper than the 89 octane "mid-grade" gasonline -- still higher than regular, but 2cents less than the 89 octane and a full 10cents less than premium! And summer has just begun.
