Do you have the vin number of this car? Would like to know what options were installed....maybe that could help explain the potential cause...

The main part you safe and no one got injured, as to why? endless scenarios are possible, a friend of mine work on investigating claims for Insurance companies he tell me about cars catching fire due to a cigarette dumped by other drivers in the front, and how some cars can experience electrical problems that trigger the fire due to car exposed to high water levels on the road during local floods.
A colleague at work had his Volvo burn down after he parked the car in his drive it was the air vent filter blocked as a result of the car always parked under trees.
I hope the outcome is on your favour from the Insurance point of view and not down to car maintenance.

But the cause here really irks me. And its not even my car!

I suspect it is driving you nuts. Did BMW have any speculation?
Not a clue. They have never seen anything like it. Not sure if that's the whole story though. Seems suspicious since it's so quiet...

And you're correct, I would REALLY like to know what caused this.

Absolutley, I'm glad that i'm not in a wheelchair!
That's crazy, never would've guessed that the air vent could cause anything like this. I would guess that it was something mechanical/electric this time. Mostly because how intense it was burning.

That's another case of a Bimmer randomly Burning! Recently my Brother's Recently Purchased M3 E92 raaaaaaaaaaaaaandomly burst into flames. It all happened while he was driving, moderate speed, only around 20k KMs on the Clock, the Car was a Manual, suddenly the engine stopped revving and stopped, then he heard a big clunk from the bottom of the engine, and the flames started from there. Neither the Insurance nor the Police know Why in the freaking world that happened.

Ironically weeks later, in the same exact parking lot he stopped the car in when the engine stopped revving, a bunch of other cars caught fire there in the SAME EXACT SPOT. Haunted Much?

Either Way, glad you're fine, time for a New Car...

Now this is interesting. I noticed that you can see flames under the F10 in the first few pictures too. It also looks like it started on the passenger side on the E92. Very strange...

Best wishes to your brother! I wouldn't park there again.
