Way too many N63 engines have already gone thru premature timing chain failures and premature valve stem seal replacements. At least BMW finally acknowledged the valve stem steals and released updated versions. The N63 is a great power plant, and it does not need to display a smoke show for everyone to see coming out the tail pipes because it is burning oil that have bypassed the failed valve stems. How embarrassing actually. Only smoke show from this car should be from the wheels |

The N63 engine was designed incorrectly.
I have a 2011 550i that I purchased 3 years ago with 24k miles. It was a CPO. It now has 69k. Within a month of ownership they had to replace the fuel injectors because the engine failed. Within 2 more months the battery died so they replaced it. The fuel injectors failed again shortly after. They fixed. Another issue with a turbo, so they replaced it. Now I took it in because it was rough idling again and the battery was not charging. They hit me witha $15,000 repair bill. The valve seals needed to be replaced as well as the oil pan gasket. The battery also needed to be replaced again. They won't cover any of the repairs as I'm out of warranty. My extended warranty won't cover these either.
The engine was designed poorly which BMW knew from the beginning. The oil change interval was 15k miles. But, the oil was burning too rapidly and deteriorating causing fuel to degrade the valve seals. The engine produces too much heat. They changed the service interval to 10k miles and instructed the service departments to add an extra quart but the damage was done. They were also instructed to replace the batter at every oil change. What a P.O.S. I pray that I can join this class action suit. |

I've owned 7 BMWs in my life and sadly, I'll never own another.
-97 528i at 3 years old the engine blew up, cracked the block. $8k repair bill... BMW did nothing -06 M3- at 36k miles the SMG broke, $6k repair bill...BMW did nothing -11 328i- at 46k miles, the car caught fire from underneath the dash after driving about a mile. It burned to the ground within minutes. BMW did nothing -11 550i at 69k miles, 3rd battery in 3 years needs replacing, valve stem seals and oil pan gasket needs to be replaced at a $15k cost. BMW did nothing They don't stand behind their products at all. |

The N63 threads are the very reason I went with the straight-6. I gave up around a half-second 0-60... No big whoop in my mind. And power I could rarely, if ever use. I've had nary a mechanical problem with either of our 535i's. |

Ordinarily I wouldn't comment on a thread such as this, but FWIW and as stated above, these sorts of lawsuits inevitably result in the law firms that initiate them receiving a ton in a settlement -- no one actually litigates the issues -- and, much more importantly, meaningless "compensation" (sic) for the members of the class after legal expenses, expert fees and salaries are deducted. Thus, anyone expecting a new engine, a replacement automobile, etc., or thousands of dollars in compensation for their expenses is living a fantasy. Even the notion of somehow "sticking it to BMW" is a fiction: the costs of litigation are deductible as an operating expense and/or passed on to future buyers. That's the simple reality of class action lawsuits.

I don't know the facts of this particular BMW case or what the plaintiffs are asking for -- new engine? refund for repair costs already made? extended warranty? -- but I could list lots of class action settlements that directed real relief and compensation for consumers. Yeah the lawyers got paid but so did the class members. btw I'm not a lawyer.

John, your perception of the merits of class action lawsuits is admirable. Unfortunately, the reality of what they have become -- an industry unto themselves consumed with greed -- is far, far different from what you apparently believe it to be. This, however, is not the place to debate the issue. See, e.g., https://www.manhattan-institute.org/...s/TLI-0116.pdf. |

That sucks, under warranty? My totals the last year or so are about the same. Fortunately, it was mostly all covered under CPO. I can't imagine the pain of many of those unwitting buyers of non-warranted N63's after their first year or two of ownership.

There is an update from bimmerfest forum yesterday
Hey gentlemen... Been following this thread for some time and I have some good news. QUOTE BELOW I have a 2012 X5 5.0 same issue.... internal/external oil leak/consumption, going through a quart every 4,000 miles. My brother is the head service manager at our local BMW Dealership. A couple days ago he found out that BMW NA will be rolling out a new campaign (technically not a recall as it's not safety related) to address the N63 engine issues. There was a critical legal battle in California that BMW lost. They are anticipating to roll out the campaign sometime between mid-January - early March. Folks that already paid for the fix will be compensated through BMWs reimbursement program. As the these engines have started to age and hit 60-80 thousand miles over the past 2 years there has finally been enough visibility and legal battles to get BMW to step up on this. 1st week in January I should have more info, but this came from the top and my brother said it's going to happen. His dealership does about 3 to 4 N63 rebuilds a week. |

Heres my story ...
Well, the end is here ....
at 122K miles car was smoking, eating 1 qt oil every 500 miles , and beginning to leak oil from oil pan gasket and valve cover gasket Turns out the N63's Valve stem seals were all shot- thats why it was slurping oil.. Get these repair estimates ( BMW dealer): valve stems - $11872 Valve cover gasket- $3765 Oil Pan gasket- $2813 and for good measure the engine vacuum pump is shot too - $1846 Grand total of $20,423 for a car that on a good day worth $14K to private party I have had an amazingly GREAT relations with my dealer SA over 12 years and 3 cars- he always goes to bat for me. This 550i was great for first 80K miles . I told him there was NO WAY I was putting any further of my $$ into this car- what can BMW do? After a week of them reviewing the matter - they on their nickel did the valve stem job - WOW. and since they had to tear the engine apart replaced the valve cover gasket too. BMW San Diego rocks. Treat your SA with respect , kindness and courtesy always . Just got her back , immediately drove over to CarMax - they offered my $9000, Im turning her in Saturday.. Its been a good run, but I kept this 5 too long. NEVER drive a V8 BMW out of warranty - fortunately I purchased a 100K warranty when car was delivered. So - now - Ive got a Porsche Macan GTS on way will be here Tuesday- ready for something a little different.. Best wishes everyone
