What is the round rubber bit for?
This has been bugging me since I got my car, below the LHS temp control, there is a small round rubber thing. Does anyone know what it's for or why it's there?
P.s. I nicked the image off another forum, so thanks to whoever owns it! |

I think you'll find that it is a temperature sensor. Some have noticed that it isn't placed all that well since you may have a hot cup of coffee or a cold drink sitting right in front of it. The Germans don't tend to drink in their cars as much, and use them for driving, so it probably doesn't matter much. Maybe a room-temp bottle of water, which wouldn't affect it too much.

I've been wondering the same thing, and temp sensor might be a good guess.

They would be a bit close together if they were temperature sensors; there wouldn't be much difference between the two.

No 'sensor' here on the F11 ('10) 520d SE.

It is the temperature sensor. It used to be behind the little "grille" and now it isn't.

It isn't, at least, not properly. How could you have an accurate temperature differential in such a small space without a physical divide? All the two settings do is to give a bias.

Well obviously you couldnt - and the word 'accurate' is yours, not mine ..... nevertheless, there is a difference !

yes because of the bias. If you have one side set higher then the other the blending flaps will distribute warmer air onto that side but it's only ever controlled by one "overall" sensor.

This is (my picture) the climate control on 520d SE (2010). Not sure whether it's basic or 'different' :
