2010 Hyundai Genesis .... not bad
I wonder if many previous BMW owners would defect into getting the V-8 version of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis. From the specs and the price, it is such a good bargain.
If I was not into the status symbol (I am being honest here), I would probably buy the V-8 Hyundai Genesis. Then again, most people here are more bias toward the F10 because of the NAME BRAND and the more sport-like driving performance of the BMW. |

Status symbol and brand name mongering aside, there's usually a reason why something costs more than other. People seek and pay extra for the BMW, MB, Audi, etc. because they bring top notch engineering and design.
For me design means a lot and is something that can not be quantified as it is very subjective. European luxury cars bring a time tested design philosophy that the Asian car companies can not bring to the table. Granted most car companies use or get outside design firm's influence and are a bag of mix/match stolen ideas. Hyundai Genesis is a superb machine as I've driven one and a friend owns one (the V6), but the design is bland and is getting old already. It's been out 2~3 years? European cars tend to live longer when it comes to looks... for example, the e39 still looks great in my opinion. Like I said, it's a very subjective matter so I will leave the design factor here. Something else that can't be quantified that I love about BMWs... the seat of the pants feel. |

If i can't afford european, i will consider japanese. if not even that, i will consider korean. And finally, I will consider buying used from the soviet union as last resort.

My sister has one, loaded to the hilt. Feels like driving a tin can compared to my BMW. Features are cool, but they are having many of the knick knacks failing. Always in the shop.

I drove a V6 for three weeks it is definitely better than some of the japanese cars out there but you can't compare it to european cars and especially BMW

I think the title of this thread sums it up pretty well...."2010 Hyundai Genesis .... not bad" ... yes... not BAD but not GOOD.

Genesis
IMO, the Genesis would have greater appeal to the M-Benz than BMW crowd. The Genesis, as glowing as the reviews may be, feels far too "numb and isolated" for my taste. Very little driver engagement/involvement, even less excitement. It's like driving a Whirlpool or a Kenmore. I'd far prefer my (imperfect) E24 M6, despite it being a much older car, to a Genesis optioned to the hilt. Thanks, but no thanks.

I have to chime in here as I own a 2009 Genesis V8. The car cost half what I paid for the 535i. Is the BMW twice the car? No. The Genesis is a tremendous car on it's own merits. The car is blisteringly fast, very big, has much better road feel then any Lexus or American car I have driven.
The biggest departure is the chassis involvement. The Genesis is more of a luxo cruiser, you wouldn't want to be tossing this thing around. With the 5 you have the option of doing so especially if you have the Dynamic handling package. I am a BMW guy all the way, but I bot that instead of a 3 series, because personally the 3 was way too small for my fat arse, and the cars were about the same price. We're kinda comparing apples to oranges here as I doubt most people will cross shop the two brands. But Lexus/Infiniti/Acura, better watch their backs because Hyundai/Kia are building cars that are comparable but at a significant discount. This was the Japanese playbook in 1989, and since then they have gotten very arrogant with their pricing. Heck if I'm gonna spend that much coin on a Lexus, I may as well spend a little more to get a Benz, and skip the gold chains. |

I have done exactly that - "looked at the car and not the brand". The Genesis and most of the Japanese makes are absent "passion and soul". To me and for my style of driving, there's little pleasure driving them. I've had BMWs since the late 60's and have never been let down by the fun they impart on the motoring experience. Maybe I'm a masochist - I also enjoy my '70 Citroen DS21.

Although I do not have a F10, I do have an E60 550i w/sport pkg as well as a V8 Genesis and Gatoman is definitely on the right track. As much as some cocky BMW owners would like to think that the Genesis is a lesser machine, I would beg to differ. In fact, I have a hard time every morning trying to decide which car I should drive to work. While the 550i is definitely the better handling car and inspires confidence, the Genesis is absolutely the more comfortable car. On long road trips, I will always take the Genesis because of the extra space, comfort, and quietness. In this regard, I would say that the Genesis makes the 550i feel like an economy car, and I can certainly say that I have thought that more than a few dozen times. On the other hand, if I were to go on a trip with long stretches of smaller country roads, the BMW will definitely be my choice because of its high level of handling capability. Although the Genesis is no slouch and can out handle many cars on the road, its does not instill as much confidence as the 550i.
In the end, I would say that both cars have their advantages and I feel extremely lucky to have both. Cocky BMW owners who feel that the Genesis is below BMW or not a real car are simply ignorant and a bigot. |

The problem is the ones that are decent size are FWD (yuk!). The RWD cars with the exception of the Chrysler are all too small. The Genesis was the only one you could buy that was a large car, had a V8, was RWD and optioned nicely was under 35k. All my preconceived notions about Hyundai were smashed after the test drive. |

I got a V6 Genesis as a rental car in Seattle this week and was surprised at how much I liked it. It was powerful, quiet, and nice. It didn't handle that well, but I find that I don't care about that as much as I used to.
Where it fell down, for me, was the switchgear on the dash. It had that same light grey plastic look that I find in a Toyota Corolla. It worked fine, but if I drove the car every day it would be a very un-ignorable visual reminder that I compromised. But, again, a pretty impressive car generally. Especially for the price.

To each their own and this thread is entirely subjective, but I have heard they are decent cars, but definitely not for me. If I couldn't afford BMW if go back to Lexus or give Acura a shot.

This is very subjective as one of the poster said, If I want a big car that can't handle with load of space, I would consider a minivan.
