I think this is true for CIC cars, NBT cars can use factory mic and reverse camera. Switching between carplay and rearview camera is seamless. You'll always be in Carplay (MMI) display, if you want to switch to BMW NBT menus you have to press and hold "Menu" key for 2-3 seconds and same is for going back to carplay display.
You'll lose song list (audio is using AUX) and navigation directions on HUD since non-BMW navigation apps don't output navigation directions on instrument cluster or HUD.

Thanks. Not having HUD is a no-go for me, along with the cost. I'm experimenting with my options which include the iPhone itself as an added GPS/traffic while using idrive GPS without traffic for its fuel economy friendly and HUD connectivity features.

BMW's own carplay implementation in NBT EVO doesn't have directions in the HUD. HUD directions is a feature of BMW's navigation app that comes with NBT/NBT EVO.
You can certainly run BMW navigation and navigation app (for HUD directions) and carplay navigation app at the same time, just mute voice direction on one of them.

So my thought was to run the NAV through the iDrive (to take advantage of the HUD NAV) and use the phone mirroring for traffic using apple or google maps. If I understand you correctly, that won't be possible? It's one or the other?

Yes, you can use BMW navigation for HUD directions and Apple Carplay or Android Auto for Google maps or Waze on the screen

Looks like this issue is gaining some traction at BMWUSA. See post #67 in this thread on the F15/F16 forum. Hopefully they arrive at a technical solution to retrofit the 4G radio to our cars.

I will be bringing this issue up with my dealer the next time I go in so they know those of us with F10s are also looking for a solution - I recommend others do the same.

"Due to a phasing out of the 3G network by cellular carriers, ConnectedDrive services can no longer be supported starting February 2022 for select vehicles" So they shut me out of traffic February 2021. Yeah, that makes sense

I sent the BMW Connected Drive a few emails but all I got back was the same generic response as reported in the other thread.

Will the nav still work or will I lose total access to navigation because of this? I never use the connected drive apps but I definitely use my cars navigation which would be upsetting to lose.

This is just the real time traffic info that uses a 3G cellular connection. The actual navigation uses GPS and no data connection.

Looks like some people are getting notices via email or mail that their car is eligible for an upgrade. See F30 forum: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1823438

According to the FAQ, this upgrade will be free of charge. Has anyone with an F10 gotten something like this?

I just spoke to a bmw customer relations rep yesterday, she informed me that the no cost upgrade would be offered to models 2016+, my F10 being a 2014 I’d have to pay out of pocket.

Did she say how much? I'll probably call and then complain when she says the 2014 (my MY) isn't covered as there is no real difference between the 2 MY's; they're both LCI's.

My build date is August 2015 as a 2016 model. Wonder if that will be eligible for the upgrade.

She said the cost would depend on the dealership. I agree there’s zero difference, it should be split between pre LCI or LCI, it seems maybe they just picked 2016 as the cutoff? I’m going to reach out to my local dealer and see if I can push them for the upgrade, first at no cost to me then if they say no 50% split.

The droid I just talked to at BMWNA CS was clueless. He sounded like he was just reading from a script. He said I should talk to my dealer, so I shot a text to my SA; we'll see what he has to say.

Got to my dealer as BMW suggested several times and the latest bulletin the "genius" had was dated 5.5.21 and it was zip, nada, nothing that could be done about it. "Call the cell company Verizon and AT&T for their decision to cancel 3G."

Sigh...

I just got my e-mail telling me my car is ineligible. It's a 2016 but has a MFR date Aug 24, 2015. 535D. Now I'm going to have to do some digging to see if I have a 3G or 4G commod. I'll be at the dealer soon enough and will start digging into it.

The e-mail did note that they are offering full connected drive services complimentary until Feb '22 for everyone capable of receiving them. I'm going to update my connected drive this afternoon and check if RTTI returns.

I tried that and no joy - the system says those services are no longer available for the car. That said, maybe this is their intent and it needs to be rolled out. At least we wouldn't need to lose the services for the period of time during which 3G is still available.

My neighbor just bought an X5 (2018, IIRC) and "knows a guy" that has experience updating the comboxes. He's going to check with him and see if upgrading the combox to a 4G unit is feasible. I'll report what I find out.
