That's easy.
If MPG / fuel costs is no issue: 550i all the way!

I don't know about SA but throughout europe the 550i is so expensive that an M5 should be considered as well.

On the other hand, I own a 535d and an e92 M3. And in daily drive conditions there's no big difference in performance between the two. The diesel is pretty impressive.

My thoughts entirely and, although I haven't driven an M3, it's reassuring to hear the 535d favourably compared from someone who has.
I have over 11k miles on my 535d and I never cease to be amazed ay the low-end effortless thrust.
What is possibly more important than the choice between two high power engines is the suspension and I would highly recommend the OP to seriously consider adaptive drive with variable damper control; it gives you everything from a smooth ride over cobblestones and potholes to virtually flat high speed cornering, whilst maintaining an amazing degree of compliance at all times.
Some early F10 models had steering problems in that it was not very communicative, but last March BMW changed the entire rack/motor/control assembly to that which is fitted to the F12, which has vastly improved both feedback and response.
