I was looking to swap steering wheels in my F10 and there is NO DIY online yet for this model of steering wheel. I think I could get through most of it, but no idea how to get the airbag to release from the wheel. If anyone could help, I would greatly appreciate it. Cheers.

There should be two or three small "holes" on the back of the steering wheel where the attachments are located. The big question however is what kind? Do a google search on replacing BMW steering wheels. I also think there were some DIY replacement instructions on BMWTIPS.com that you could reference.

Older cars with airbags, but most likely similar if not identical to what we have.

I have found they are not similar at all. I have tried referencing all the DIY forums I could find, nothing on the new wheels. This was sort of confirmed today by BMW when they told me I would need a special tool. Not sure I believe that, but on the newer 3-series it is a matter of releasing a spring. Thank you for your suggestion

Well, I have the M wheel apart that I am going to put in the car and I still can't figure it out....I cannot for the life of me see how to get in there and release the spring. Thank you for the idea though.

For the safety factor of the airbag alone, take it to the dealer and have them do it. Just talk to the shop manager and he will probably work a deal if he is at all resonable. (most are in my experiences) It does look like it takes a special tool and for a half hour or hour charge, gets you where you want to be.

Yeah, I am leaning that way. Called and it would be about $55 to swap, probably worth it...then i can point to them if it is all messed up. Cheers.

$55 to swap airbags sounds a lot cheaper than reasonable, take it to the dealer.
