535i Pure stage 2?

Thinking about getting out my fbo 335i into a 535xi or 550xi. I would perfer the 535 because of price and mpg but really would be looking for a 500whp capability. I see all the other n55 have been making decent power with the pure stage 2. I havent' seen any info on the 535's just something about the ecu being harder to tune. Any input is greatly appreciated.

I had a 535xi and now have a 550i... both 8 speeds and both 100% stock, not sure if the x drive reduced economy or not, but I get the same 23 mpg combined street/hwy average in both cars, and freeway only at 80 mph cruise I get 26 in the 550 and got 24-25 in the 535. 60 mph cruise id get 28 in the 535 and 27 in the 550, so if fuel economy is your only concern, id think twice about just getting the 535. Cruise takes a lot less effort with the V8 at speeds and its barely turning rpm at 70 mph, in addition the 4.4L V8 doesn't require a lot of fuel to idle compared to larger v8s in other brands that do.

Keep in mind I live in AZ, there are no hills, I don't drive in town much and I do my best to avoid traffic, your results may vary.

Any update to this, I'm in the same boat with my 535. The Pure Stage 2 is looking like a nice option but haven't seen anyone with it yet.

Wow! Just read up on the Pure 2...sounds like a great option. Even stage 1 sounds pretty good but how will all that power on stage 2 handle on the stock components of the BMW?

so here's some info on the PureTurbo upgrade for the 535i!

Hi Gene,

Your turbo is different than the 135/335 turbo but we do have our STG2 available for your vehicle also.

First thing is no more 89, these engines crave octane so if you want to run pump gas only you need the highest octane you can find(91/93/100. JB4 is the easiest to tune on these vehicles. The stock fuel system is fine until you want to run higher quantities of ethanol. The higher the octane the more boost you can run and the more you will get out of the STG2 turbo. High flow cats or catless downpipes are another upgrade we recommend to get the most from the turbo.

Hi Gene,

Our turbo is 100% bolt on, no modification required. On 91 you can run 15-17psi which is around 420-450whp to redline. The addition of meth would put you over the 500WHP mark. The turbo is $2500 plus $775 core deposit.

The best $2500 you will ever spend You would need a custom tune to really take advantage of it though.

motor itself should be fine...i really don't want to start doing internals again (sleeved block, rods, pistons, balanced crank, fuel pump yadiyada!) i'd just like to slap this on...add a tune and call it a day. maybe upgrade later but you know what i mean. how does the core deposit work tho?

Since the Pure turbo is just a hogged out larger wheel stock turbo, you install their turbo then send them back your old one, then they refund your core charge... or you pay the core charge if you want to keep the stock turbo. Engine should be fine, the larger turbo will be significantly more efficient so even at the same boost level it will make more power, but you need to be careful adding boost through any sort of programmer as while the stock one struggled at higher RPM, this one wont and if you dont pull timing somehow or add better fuel, you will end up with some issues. The computer should still control boost just fine, but for those who have the JB2 cranked WAY up need to turn it back to stock and work slowly from stock boost levels. With a custom tune, its all in the tuners hands so you wont have to worry about it.

Get yours done, find a reputable tuner and have it to where you can comfortably and reliably make more power than a modded 550i and you will have people lining up for it... Unfortunately while the turbo is the easy part, getting a solid tune everyone is satisfied with will be the make or break on how popular this is. ESS Tuning has turbos waiting for me but I wont be doing anything unless his guys can crack the ECU.

Probably the last thing I will do since my car is warranty. But it's nice to know I might as well go big than a small upgrade.

I've already been heavily considering this path too, but then again maybe it's just time to step up to a 550i with a tune. That said, it is cheaper to drop 3k for turbo and install then a new down payment.

Listen to me negotiating with myself. Haha

lol...I do this all the time! If I we're to do this upgrade I have to consider all cost involved. Complete exhaust including DP CP and maybe GSR tune totallying around $6850! cause I think if I don't do anything to the exhaust side I'm basically choking the engine

Mission Performance tune stage 2, stage 1 Pure Turbo, and DP you should be able to pull that off for $3-3500 with install. Gains should be about 360-380ish whp

I thought about that too but read better off going with PureTurbo 2 upgrade. Ill have to rethink my budget next spring since the car will be hibernating during the winter. Plans were coilovers, paint rear bumper, carbon side skirts, skirt extensions and exhaust. Hmmmmm...
