I tried the 2012 528 but have upgraded...
While I might be late to this thread I can relate my experience having just traded my 2012 528i (with the new 4 cylinder) for a 2013 535i.
And by the way, this is my first post! This will be my 5th BMW and 5th 5 series. I was really in love with the previous generation for the balance between ride and handling - nothing like it that I've experienced! The redesigned 5 series really took some getting used to for me. I was ready for the additional ride comfort, as if I was upgrading to a 7 series, but I missed the handling. I waited for the 2012 with the new engine, and liked it at first. However, the difference in fuel economy is really not that much especially for spirited drivers. It can however deliver stellar gas mileage on the highway at speeds of 72 or below. But for city driving and to get the acceleration it can deliver, you are going to suck up the gas. I averaged 25 mph over what I believe was the entire 11 months that I had the car which included a fair amount of highway miles. I am driving fewer miles now and wanted to have the increased power. But I also forgot how different the engine sounds with the new 6. In other words, the sound of the 4 cylinder is slightly annoying and sounds cheap. That is the first big difference for me between the 2 models. The second major difference is in the ride and handling since my new car has the M sport package. For those of us who loved the previous 5 series I think this is a very desired option. I love the increased sportiness, too. And I am surprised that the Dunlop tires are pretty quiet. The multi-contour seats on my new 535i is probably the favorite option. All three of these major additions to my new new 5 series have made a huge difference. My new car doesn't look much different since I stayed with Titanium silver, but oh what a difference in ride and handling, and sound of the motor. My previous approach was different in that I wanted a BMW 5 series on a budget, under 50K. But I guess that didn't work out so well. My approach this time was to buy a more expensive car, so that a loaded 5 series turned out to be perfect! Last edited by BMW Loyalist; 11-28-2012 at 07:28 AM.. |

I would go with the 6 cyl engine. If not for power then the sound and smoothness of the engine. I've had a 4cyl turbo engine and I'll never go back.

I have been driving my 2012 528i MSport for about 5 months.
I'm extremely satisfied with the engine performance - great pickup, zero turbo lag, no issues with power. Honestly it doesn't feel like a 4 cyl at all. The only negative - Sounds like CRAP when you first start the car and when your driving aggressively. It doesnt give the car a Premium/Luxury feel, it doesn't make u want to stomp on the gas and DRIVE. Verdict - If you are not particular, get the 528i - its quiet and def has more than enough power for 99% of drivers. To me there is something missing with the 528i, maybe its the sound or something more and that is why im upgrading soon.
