if BMW sedans are called 1er, 3er and 5er, why aren't SUVs called X1er, X3er or X5er?

(yes, I know it's a silly question, but I've wondered about it for a long time)

Well, to me they are. Honestly, I don't know (or really care) what exactly that "-er" means.

Well.... I do have a 2023 X1 and a 2024 530i is coming in about a month. (but I'm keeping both)

Correct, but vague. "A derivative from a number" (#3) and 'X' makes it fail to conform.
