I didn't want to pay $200 for a BMS intake. So I looked and I made my own.
I used an UPG8 4 ply silicone hose and a universal K&N filter that had similar dimensions to the BMS intake filter. Total cost $54 I measured the ID of the intake (roughly 3.5"). In order to get a strong enough silicone hose that would fit that that dimension it ended up being a 3.18" ID hose and a 3.56" OD. The difference of .06" made a nice tight fit into the intake. I reused the original clamp from the stock intake. The silicone hose is a 45 deg in order to move it more into the open space of the engine compartment. With BMS you keep the base of stock intake which forces BMS to route air through a small oval shape tube then opens up. This custom intake is completely open and smooth. Once the lower section of stock box is removed the 3 locating rods for the base section are still in place. One of the rods is positioned perfectly to support the end of the filter once installed. The filter ID is 3.5" also like the ID of stock intake so it's perfect fit. Could use larger filter if you wanted with ease Have videos of stock vs this intake, just email if you want to see them. |

here's mine, total cost $39 . 4-ply high perf silicone intake tube $10 , hi-flow filter cone $29 . Looks good, but sounds about the same as stock box.

I didn't like the 90deg because places filter right on top of engine. Only air can go in half that filter. Move that out with a 45 deg and the entire filter can suck in air

I can hear more whistling/swoosh sound when the turbo kicks in and while on the throttle the intake noise is more pronounced versus stock, but not night and day difference. For $40 its worth a try. I'll go back to stock when summer returns since I'm worried about heat soak with open air filter in the engine bay.

You can't. That's where the BMS system goes to a narrow opening so it can go over the top of the box.
This set up is a large diameter and the only way to retain the bottom part of the box would be to modify it so their is no side wall of the bottom box. Even then you would need a narrow filter to fit under the hood. |

I think you guys are completely overlooking something.
The coupler will collapse under suction. That is why the BMS one is a solid hard pipe with a filter. I went down this road long ago on my Mitsubishi evo. I thought it was genius and a saved a penny. Until I put the car on the dyno and could see the coupler collapsing under wot. When it is collapsed it will obviously be restrictive. |

You have to be smart enough to use a high ply. Look at K&N CAI systems. They all use a non plastic connection to throttle body. Doesn't collapse. I've also had my car on dyno with no collapsing 356/439 to wheels AWD
