trip preparation question...

so I'm planning a long trip with my f10 (about 3000 miles) and i'm going to do it on my 20's with hankook tires, now I'm thinking to take my 17" winter wheel just in case as backup, if something happens and I put on that 17" wheel, will it be fine? nothing will happen to alignment or to the suspension? or what would you advise ?

Personally, not into the 20's fad or even understand the reason for them but, more importantly, where are you going to put a set of 17" tires/rims in your car and still account for any luggage for a 3000 mile trip? Are you solo'ing it?

I think the op is proposing one 17" wheel as a spare. It should work fine. The circumference is the critical measure and it must be close to the same. Of course the car will not handle properly with one unmatched tire, so you would have to drive conservatively.

Although you can certainly drive on one 17" Wheel, with the other 3.... 20's, but there is a chance that the car will throw some codes or warnings at you as a result of sensing the difference in rotation speed. I am not sure though if this will happen. You might want to send a note to Mike Miller at the car club and see if he knows.

Why don't you give it a try before you go. Just swap a wheel on your normal trip to work one day?????

If you don't bring your 17" as spare, at least BMW Assist can help you in some way. But at least bring an electric air pump & 2/3 cans of tire sealant.

Just join the Auto Club and call them if/when you get a flat. I have a CSAA (auto club) membership and I carry a BMW jack, lug wrench, hi-power air compressor and a plug kit. All this stuff uses very little space at the back of the trunk. I don't need (or want) a spare in my trunk

I think the sealant may be a bad idea, I am pretty sure it can/will damage your TPMS sensor. You might wanna check that out before using it.

Compressor:

It's terrific, it inflates a big tire in no time. You don't want to use your cigarrette lighter because it will burn the fuse. Use this instead and connect directly to the battery in the trunk:

This is the plug kit that I have never used and hopefully never will. I have no idea if it is any good but it doesn't look too cheaply made:

For the Cdn model, F10 uses indirect tpms sensor located in the ABS system. Unlike the US, it uses direct tpms sensor which is located inside the wheel.

Useful advice there.
I'm sure the wheels (with tyres fitted) will have a similar overall diameter, so rotation speed will be the same.

My 17" and 20" certainly do- otherwise the speedo would be wrong.

LOL, what kind of stupid comment is this?! What other car would be more suitable for long trips than a brand new BMW F10? This goes to my hall of fame.

3000 miles = 4 828.032 kilometers. I've done those kind of trips with my 3-series E92 3 times without no spare wheel. There are tires shops all over Europe here. Its not that big of a problem.

Drive safe!
