LASIK - I'm getting it done

Decided today to do it. Surgery is in 2 weeks. I'm somewhat scared, somewhat excited...

My friend did it. I don't want to do it now. Feel so sorry for poor fellow...

Imagine a life when you can't see, after you know what is it like to be able to see.

HA....I created a lasik thread over here, before I had my surgery (1/20)...

Let me tell you that it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Just wait until the morning after, and you can look at the alarm clock without having to fumble around for your glasses.

I walked out of the procedure with 20/18 vision on my right and 20/20 on my left. And now (2.5 months), after healing, I'm 20/20 in both eyes.

Immediately after the procedure, you'll have light halos at nighttime. But, that will start to disappear after about two weeks.

If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask...

Was it easy to go to sleep after the surgery? I know you are supposed to keep your eyes closed afterwards.

I was turned down for Lasik because my cornea was too thin.

Right before the procedure they give you anti-anxiety meds (I think I took xanax) that keep you calm and cool. With the combination of the meds plus the burning sensation, all you want to do is just go to sleep...

My procedure ended around 3pm, and I was asleep from 4-8pm, and then went back to bed by 10ish.

i got mine done about a year ago when i was 18
BEST THING I EVER DID!!!!!!
the surgery only takes a few minutes and they let my girlfriend sit right next to me while they did it.
its crazy... you see them cut your cornea and then flip it back
pretty crazy but painless!

Me too but not if they have to cut you - I thought the idea was to tighten up the eye muscle by "burning" it???

they have to flip your cornea back so they can use the laser inside there. its not that bad. then they flip it back over and brush your eye to make sure its all good.... no pain!! i swear

So many people want lasik. It makes me wonder, what is the purpose of having eyes if we can't see properly out of them? I mean, if I was born in a different time before lasik or glasses, but I had the same body, I'd be blind. I don't konw the numbers of my eyes, but I've had glasses since I was in kindergarten, and I still can't see an inch in front of my face without glasses. The entire world is a great big blur without them.

Would any MDs here mind explaining this, if there is an answer? I know the theory that people have trouble with wisdom teeth because our jaws are getting smaller through evolution. But why is it that some have perfect vision and others are next to blind without some form of correction?

If I was born in a different time with no glasses, I couldn't be able to function. It's true Monet had a severe astigmatism and he painted some of the greatest works of art ever known. But this doesn't make any sense to me. Kind of like why do we have teeth if we're constantly going to have problems with them?

"If the world really looks like that I will paint no more!."

- Claude Monet, flinging away a pair of glasses for which he had been fitted to correct a severe astigmatism.
