That is a seriously quick diesel!
Faster than the official current M3 spec (4,8 s.)

Yes, M550d xDrive Touring is the ideal wagon! Cheaper than M5, practical and it has xDrive

They aren't coming to the U.S., so don't get too excited.

Too bad it's not coming to US
Price seems good for what it is, right inline with 50i

I'd rather have a 550i than a 550d. Which is great because I do.

I'd rather have a M550d than a 550i, but I'm quite happy with the power in my 530d as well.

Have you ever driven a diesel? My hunch is that you haven't.

I have. My brother has a 335d. I like the thrust but I don't like the throttle lag, the sound, and the roughness. If you have 2 engines with identical torque, and one is petrol V8 and the other Diesel 6, I would choose the V8.

The new 550d has exactly same torque as the 550i Dinan S2. However I would expect the Dinan V8 to be much smoother and more responsive to initial throttle application.

Have you ever driven a twin turbo V8?

Your brother's 335d has fairly old engine, plus it's US-spec
I drove it for a week, great car still
Now imagine M tuned version of it, which has 3rd turbo and other goodies?
Do you think it would drive similar to 335d?
Do you think it would suffer with lag the same way?
It's probably the same difference as between x6 50i and x6M or 550i and M5
And you'll drive twice the milage on one tank

530d, 535d (obviously no experience from M550d...):

- no throttle lag, lots of torque!
- great sound (except idle, from the outside!)
- better mileage than 535i, 550i etc.
- At least in Sweden a better resale value than petrol versions
- the only downsides are higher prices than similar petrol versions

If Diesels were so great, they would put one in a Rolls Royce or in a Ferrari.

In practice they are the choice of the economy minded buyer.

I don't disagree with that. My 550i Dinan S2 has 580lbs.

I am curious about this new car - wish I could test drive it. Hopefully it will be the first diesel without lag or truck like engine sound.
