New iDrive Touch Controller
Looking at the new iDrive controller with trackpad input and wondering if it will be as comfortable to rotate…

Interesting picture. Looks like a M5 LCI. Do you have more pics?

I am going to assume you don't have to rotate that, and just simply move your finger around on the pad

Guess you were lucky Jason; can't find it anymore on .de or .co.uk

The videos from BMW I've seen have the iDrive touch controller have the same turning mechanism but with a touch sensitive pad on the top. The one in the bmw.de Konfigurator does not look like the iDrive touch I've seen. |

The pic in post #6 is not the LCI with the touchpad iDrive.

My point is about the comments related to the size of the iDrive controller. It's a function of the computer simulation not the LCI.
Attachment #1 is using the same bmw.de Konfigurator that I used in post #6 but in this case, I selected Pro Navi and B&O as in Post #1. Attachment #2 is the same one but the view is rotated to be straight on to the center stack. The size of the controller is much smaller. Also, neither Post #1, Post 6 nor these have the crosshair lines that I've seen on photos of the iDrive Touch. |

Not really sure why BMW felt the need to copy Audi there... I was perfectly fine with previous controller. I'd rather see voice controls to be improved further...

I think the thing to copy from Audi is the Google front end. Navigation without search is old school. I think the touch interface is marginal improvement but improvement nonetheless. It is probably just the minimum stakes at the Pro Navi level.

IMHO it is not competing with Audi. It is just trying to be at the edge of technology. These days everything is touch, so why not the iDrive knob?!

Because it sort of a useless technology for the English speaking countries. We end up paying for the touch pad one way or another, I rather BMW invest that money into something else that is more useful.

The LCI is proving to be a disappointment so far. I hope these pictures are not final and accurate.
I was told these go into production July 1st. You would think they would have the official US release by May 15th which was suggested earlier. The LCI pics and configurator that were up on the .de and .co.uk websites were taken down for some reason, maybe they decided to go for a uniform global launch? Lets hope BMW gets their act together and releases this info in a timely manner.. |
