Drivetrain Malfunction HELP

got this light again today... it seems to only be happening in cold weather and at high rpm (5000rpm+) in the lower gears.

I will take it to a shop tommorow to scan for stored codes.

could this be a battery related issue? the car was shaking pretty bad. I restart and everything is fine.. engine and transmission are otherwise operating study..

I had the same error as have many others but it always seems to be something different, battery related I have never heard causing the Drivetrain error though.

How many miles are on your '11 528? Has it ever had the spark plugs replaced?

There's an outside possibility of a battery issue, however if it was shaking it sounds like a misfire, although most ignition misfires I've dealt with were lower RPM issues that tend to be less noticeable at higher RPM depending upon the severity and engine.

Was the check engine light illuminated and/or flashing in conjunction with the drivetrain malfunction warning?

I had this happen on my 2013 x3 with N20, only happened in cold weather too.

They had to do some sensor replacement and then it went away. I forget exactly which one as its been a few years.

I guess ill have to get it scanned then.. yes, I did get a check engine light but the CEL along with the malfunction warning was cleared with an ignition cycle. the engine seemed to rev really nicely.. until I got the warning so im not sure its a misfire but I guess ill only know but getting it scanned.

I recently turned over to 72,000 miles. spark plugs are original. no issues other then this.

At the very least, your plugs aren't helping anything.

They were due at 60,000 mi according to the owner's manual. Don't overlook the small basic stuff.
