First oil change

So when you buy an M car the service folks are adamant that you get the car in after the first 1200 miles to have the "break in" oil changed out for the "regular?" oil.

I also remember in the "old days" always being told to do the first oil change on a new car at just 1000 miles.

So now BMW says my first oil change on the 535 is at 10,000 miles. Any reason for me to step up and pay for an extra oil change out of my pocket at 1200 miles? I don't know enough about engines to know if it's a waste of time or not.

Anyone?

I am coming from an E90 M3 as well. The 5 series feels like a boat compared to the M3 doesnt it?

But I would do the early change for peace of mind. An oil change is pretty inexpensive, especially if you can do it yourself. Any engine oil will collect more wear metals in the first several thousand miles as the engine breaks in. Also unless you are leasing, I would not go 10k miles between changes. Cut that in half.

The only reason I can think of is that it will relieve your stress level, your blood pressure will drop a few points and you will be a nicer person to be around. Mechanically, there is not reason for an early oil change in a car like the 535i.

Didn't have my car since new so I doubt the oil was changed at 1200 miles, but I do maintain 5,000 mile oil change intervals. I own and do it for the peace of mind as I tend to keep cars longer than most people.

Not sure if this is the case for BMWs, but I remember reading that oil that comes with brand new cars is "different" from regular oil and it's recommended to be replaced soon after break in period in order to get super fine metal bits (result of break in perhaps) out. Can't reliably say this is true, though I did it with my last 3 new cars I owned.

I suppose it all depends if you plan to keep the car longer, but can't hurt to do it. If BMW manual states 10K miles I guess that's safe, but can't hurt to ask someone you trust at the dealership.

Newer (late 90's on) engines don't need break-in oil any more. Tolerances are much, much tighter than they used to be.

I've been using 10K-15K synthetic oil changes for the last 15 years. I bought a 2000 Lincoln LS new and after the free oil changes (they went 5K with a synthetic blend) quit at 12K miles I switched to Mobil1 and the 10K-15K interval. My daughter now drives the car and it was over 186K miles. It passed a recent check-up and smog check with flying colors.

Mobil1 touted yearly or a 25K interval when it was first introduced. True synthetics are much better than any conventional oil. Check it out......
