Auto Trunk
I was deleting some old files and came across a PDF of the 2011 brochure. I noticed that is says that the remote will both open AND close the trunk. I can only open mine with the remote and have to use the button in the trunk to close it. Does anyone have the ability to close their trunk with the remote -- have I missed something here?

Sure, the remote closes the trunk too.
You gotta have option 316 "bootlid operation, powered" though.

I have a copy of the Owner's Manual (North America) in PDF format. It clearly indicates the remote will close the trunk if held for a few seconds. I then went to my vehicle to confirm this as I too thought it would not work. It did not work. I could not close the trunk using the remote. I then got the printed Owner's Manual out of my glove box and sure enough the reference to closing the trunk lid via the remote has been removed. I suspect it has something to do with some regulators in Washington thinking Americans (and therefore Canadians by default) will squish children by the dozen's if we were given the power to remotely close our trunks - and windows for that matter.

The remote on our 2011 Acura MDX opens and closes the rear hatch. My 535i trunk/boot does not close via remote.
My 11 month old accidentally opens it once a week. In our case the garage door helps auto-close it... |

I think it's unfair to blame Washington for our own ridiculously fat and litigious society. There's plenty of other stuff to blame them for, but in this case I suspect that BMW removes those features from the North American market because if anything ever goes wrong with anything around here, then we (Americans) tend to sue BMW over it. I don't think Canadians are as bad as we are, but they get punished as well just due to proximity.

BTW does anyone know if there are reprogrammers available to over-ride or initialize these features that are available in other jurisdictions? I'd love to be able to: 1) fold side mirrors upon locking of vehcle, 2) unlock doors when engaging park, 3) close doors, windows and trunk with remote key. Thanks, Bill

Shouldn't you be locking your car when you leave it out? And what's the deal with folding the mirrors? If your car isn't going to move by itself, they should be ok where they are. I fold mine for moving in narrow confines. If someone else gets that close to your car while it's parked, you're going to have other problems.

I live in the country on a multi-acre estate. I have bigger problems than worrying about the safety of my car with the need to lock the doors - I do lock the car at night or when we leave the property (at that point the car is put away in the garage). If I'm worried about a break-in with car, I sure as heck am worried about what the un-invited guest is upto with rest of my property. When I'm in the city I always lock my car while parked - even the driveway of my townhouse. I work away from home during the week in the city (hence the townhouse). I park in a large underground parking lot while at work where people are continually walking between the cars while enroute to the elevators, etc. A number of people, including myself, fold our mirrors in the while parked in the lot unless we were fortunate to find a parking slot that does not have pedestrian flow around it (I do try for these slots but I am not always successful). Ideally I would not expose my vehicle to such potential hazards but the reality is we don't always have the choice. Thanks, Bill

Interesting. I think, though, even in the country I'd close up my car when it's out and unattended, to keep animals, dust, birds, bird byproducts, etc. out of the interior.
