The main troubleshooting technician drover the car and heard the noise. He said he's seen the problem with other 5 series and 7 series cars. His educated guess was that it had something to do with the stabilizer bars, that because they move hydraulically on either end of the bar, the bushings are being torqued, thus causing the noise.

He said he would post the complaint with BMW NA and was confident there would be a fix designed in fairly short order...a new bushing design or something simple.

It's not that big a deal, now that the tech assured me nothing is going to fall off or break because of the noise.

It's not detracting from my enjoyment of the car thusfar. Every time I drive it, I find something else I like. This car is definitely the total package. It looks great and is amazaing fast and a handling dream...lots of toys, too.

If anyone comes up with a clear diagnosis of the wierd noise problem, I'll be happy to pass it along to my dealer.
Thanks for the update. Great summary of the car as well.

wierd noise in 2011 550xi gt

Now that the weather turned cold (26 degrees F this morning), the noise in the four corners of the car (especially in the front!) is much louder. It sounds like a rumbling, growling noise. I'd be really interested in learning of anyone else experiencing these problems.

Sounds similar to the issues chronicled in the attached thread.

We had the wind noise too, from the front passenger side. they replaced the entire side view mirrors, and this fixed it totally. Have your service manager call the service manager at Checkered Flag BMW in Virginia Beach at 757-490-1111, have him ask for Paul. Paul is well versed in this issue, and worked with the mother ship in Germany on this.

My 550 GT needs oil monthly

My 550 GT has needed oil on a monthly basis since we purchased it on 3/10. The dealer claims this normal. Has anyone had this problem?
