Yours truly
This is reassuring. Just got back from a road trip - will attempt it this week. Quote:
Sweet. Thanks for the info. I'll checkout Colby wheel if the Colourlock option doesn't pan out. Quote:

2-hrs later...
I hate it. Installed the steering wheel so I can drive the car to pick up the kids and in the sun the color difference is noticeable. What I hate more is the feel of it. It fees like hard paint brushing against your palm and fingers, instead of the silky leather feel. Mewant. Fail. Colourlock. Fail. Time to replace the damn wheel. -------- Finished up the work on the steering wheel last night using the Colourlock kit and I have to say it came out better than I thought. The color blends in very well with the rest of the wheel. Texture is a bit off, but I'm guessing with use it'll smooth out. I have to wait 24 hours before applying the protector and then can use the wheel. The top of the wheel was mostly scruffy and faded, but I had a small rip at bottom that I ended up using super glue gel (saw another person doing this) and it worked like a charm. You really can't tell anything was there. The question is going to be whether it holds up with use and cleaning. Time will tell. Still planning on reaching out to Coby and found a European shop that sells them refurbished. So I have options if this doesn't work out.

It looks really good out of the sunlight, but once outside, you can notice the Colourlock treated area has more of bronze/brownish tint to it. I can honestly live with that, it's the rough texture compared to the leather that I really don't like.
I got in touch with Coby Wheel yesterday and going that route. His work looks really good.

They're gonna do perforated leather grips and solid leather top/bottom with tricolor stitching. They sent me a picture from a previous customer and it looks so good. I have nothing against Alcantara, but I feel it would stick out too much in my car with all mocha leather interior and no other Alcantara bits.
I opted for the core-exchange rather than sending mine in since it takes around 3 weeks.

Just $20 more that their standard two-tone Alcantara option ($295 total). There is also a core charge that you'll be refunded once they receive your old one. Best part is that I get to retain my heating option.
Here is the example pic they sent me. Can't wait to get it.

I bet even the pre LCI non sport steering wheel would look nice with that leather/perforated leather trei-color stitiching combination in the pic above.
I might have to put some pennies together.

Wouldn't be worth it for the Pre LCI. I feel like the newer wheels look so much more modern.

Well...that takes some of the wind out of the sails. Alcantara doesn't do it for me....I'd prefer all leather or leather+ perforated leather.
Did it seem like they were eluding to all pre LCI steering wheels...or just the regular/standard pre LCE steering wheel. I only ask because there's a pre LCI "sport steering wheel" & "M-sport steering wheel", too. They both have a triangularish air bag...but is still different than the regular/standard pre LCI steering wheel in that they have the little "grips" at the 10 & 2 o'clock positions. The Alpina steering wheel has the same design as well...just different emblem and stitching.

That's a bummer. I feel like you have a lot of options though on eBay for really good prices if you don't have heating option.
BTW, the Colourlock fix is a dud. I'm slowly seeing streaks snd stains in the repaired areas if my hands are even remotely sweaty. I also noticed a lot of dye coming off when I cleaned the wheel with Colourlock's own mild cleaner. A lot of people swear by their products and I'm sure they're great on seats or the dashboard, but not so much for high traffic areas like the steering wheel. I got about another week to go based on Coby's original estimate. Can't wait.

I just bought a used LCI wheel on eBay rather than mess with getting mine reupholstered. Now I have to figure out what I need for the retrofit. Anyone know if pre-lci shift paddles fit and work with an lci steering wheel?

Can't say for certain...but a quick look in the part database (realoem.com or bimmercat.com) would give the answer. Just pull up the steering wheels and see if there is a date listed in the TO/FROM columns. Or see if the shift paddles for both steering wheels have the same 11 digit part nbr...or if the number has been superseded...see if they are retroactively exchangeable. The latter info (mentioned) is listed if you click on the 11 digit part nbr.

So...it already has paddles, but I've read they are the incorrect resistance for pre-lci. Edit: that may have just been F30 paddles on an F10 steering wheel...to/from dates cover pre-lci and lci (thanks QSilver) Last edited by beegeezy; 08-04-2021 at 02:29 PM.. |

Did you check if it was from a f30? I notice most of them are when I ask them. And I know those do not work without heavy mods. |
