M5 Exhaust on 550 - Help!
So I bought an M5 full exhaust from aznmr6 - http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1167347. I take the exhaust and my car to my shop and they call and say no go, that nothing lines up or installs correctly. From everything I read, this was a straight forward install with little problems. They say the muffler sections hit the rear control arms and that it's going to be rattling around like crazy. He refuses to do it. Who in the Westchester NY area has done this and where? I'm really disappointed about this.

Agree with 550Reasons, doesn't sound like the shop is willing or knows how to do the right work. I just had this done on my 550 in Pittsburgh.
I just posted a few pics of my setup in a new thread. I'm looking for some advice from the forum on altering the exhaust sound more to my preferences... |

Yeah, that's what I'm leaning towards. Someone has to know how to do this properly since so many people have done this. I'm not trying to throw aznmr6 under the bus in any way either, he was great during the transaction. I'm just bent that I had to spend a lot of time, effort and favors getting this huge exhaust trucked all over southern Westchester for naught.
Any shop suggestions would be most appreciated. |

I know someone else posted about this too, but, if I find a pair of oem M5 downpipes does that mean the exhaust will now line up properly and need very minimal tweaking to fit?

Theres a guy selling a set for $500 in the M5 classifieds... but as others have said, the problem isnt the exhaust, its the shop. Take it to a real exhaust shop thats able to cut and paste, and it will fit. Why spend hundreds more so a shop that is A ) not likely going to take the time to install it properly since it requires modification, and B ) already going the direction of "if it rattles, its your problem, not ours". Im sure theres an exhaust shop in town that would knock it out fast.

Not really, since the M5 runs true dual exhaust from the cats (downpipes) back, basically none of it would line up. If you wanted M5 mufflers, you would need a couple of 2.5-3 inch expansion joints and some connection pipes, but then the mufflers would bolt up. I would be weary though of installing a muffler known for rasp on a 6 cylinder car, it can either end up sounding like the M3, or like a honda, and for the cost associated with installation (unless you get the mufflers for free) youre better off having a shop use some quality aftermarket mufflers and tips of your choice.

It fits. Just had it done 2 weeks ago. As others have said, take it somewhere else.
Attached are the pics of the difference in sizes of the two. Top is M5, bottom is my old stock 550. Just need to swap the pipes up to the DPs and you'll be fine. Did you get the extra hanger parts and the M5 crossmember? Need those too.

My shop does lots of BMW repairs so they may have had them around already so I'd order those pieces to be safe.

I couldn't load getbmwparts.com, I think there's a problem with the server, but was able to order all parts from ECS tuning. Once I have them and make a decision on the M5 downpipes (really not sure), then I'll get a shop to do the conversion. I'm not going to stress it too much. I want it done right, not quick. |
