Temp Gauge reading seems high

Just did a road trip in my wife's 535 M-Sport. Highway driving in ambient temps in the mid 70's and the dash's temp gauge stayed pegged just below 250. Is the gauge a dumbed down idiot gauge like in my 911 or is the coolant really running that hot?

That's not coolant temp; it's oil temp... My '14 M-Sport runs about 5º-10º to the left of 250.

Sounds about right, had searched the forums a while back with the same question and right below 250 is correct.

Wow, even for oil that's really high. My 911's oil hovers around 190 degree on a similar drive and only gets up above 225 on the track. Do these things just have inadequate cooling or something? Oil viscosity diminishes above 212. At 240 it's essentially water thin.

That's oil temp.. and these cars do run quite hot. I'd suggest removing the plastic engine cover and and the insulation underneath to help keep temps down

My 2011 528i sits just below the 250. Seems kind of high for me but i took it to a local shop here in south florida, and they said its fine as long as it sits below 250.

they run hot for fuel economy and emissions purposes. doesnt help performance and it shears engine oil quicker.

I just run thick oil to help counter the effects of oil thinning under high temp. I would consider installing an oil cooler/intercooler.

I am thinking of having a custom vented hood fabricated to extract underhood temps.
