HD Video: 2014 M5 Competition Exhaust

Shot this recently at a local dealership. New 2014 M5 with competition exhaust, fully stock. Sounds better than most aftermarket systems in my opinion. I'm sure if you retrofitted these mufflers to a 550i it would sound similar.

Parts for retrofitting:

Left muffler: 18307848828
Right muffler: 18307848829
Clamping bush: 18307560815 (2)
Black tail pipes: 18307849341 (4)

Sounds great, so no need to change that exhaust for better sound.

I thought that the M5 Competition package exhaust was Akrapovic.

Sounds great! Now the issue will be finding someone taking it off their car because it sounds so good people wont want to change it.

A 550i will not sound like a M5 because the N63 doesn't have the cross bank exhaust manifold. That design basically eradicates the V8 warble from cross plane crank V8 and creates a exhaust sound more similar to a flat plane crank V8 (since the cross bank exhaust manifold creates the same exhaust distribution into each collector that a flat plane V8 has).

That said, it would probably still sound good. But it would still have that warble the M5 doesn't have.

Ah hah! I've wondered why my 550i doesn't come close to an M5 exhaust sound. While I've already installed the OEM M5 mufflers, I still have the OEM M5 X pipes setting in the garage. The M5 mufflers, off course, sound better than the 550i mufflers on start up and part throttle but something is still missing....It just doesn't sound like the M5 (non competition package) I test drive at the dealer. The M5 just sounds more "metallic" and has a distinct tone. Thinking that I just now have to add the M5 X pipes to get the "sound, I'm just about ready to have the shop do the install until I read your post. That "warble", then, is because of the lack of the M5's S63tu cross bank manifold. What effect on sound, if any, will the X pipe do? Am I just wasting my time? I would appreciate your thoughts on the subject.

A X-pipe is beneficial in exhaust scavenging as it "evens out" the exhaust pressure issues the cross plane V8 engine has. A x-pipe is often used to increase torque characteristics of a V8 engine.

I would say that a x-pipe won't replicate the M5 sound. The cross bank exhaust manifold is the creator of that unique sound the M5 has.

Ford used a similar concept on the GT40 in the '60ies (bundle of snakes exhaust).

I put m5 mufflers and the xpipe on my 550xi. The warble is still there assuming its the sound that the car makes when shifting. It probably is the worst aspect of the m5 exhaust on the 550xi.

Is your friend selling his factory exhaust? If so, please PM me.
