Lease End Options - Over Mileage & Need Tires

Hi everyone, and thanks in advance for your advice.

I'm about two weeks away from the end of my 36 month, 15k/year lease on a 2013 535i. Unfortunately, I'm about 11k over mileage and I most likely need to replace three of the RFTs due to low tread depth.

My first instinct is to purchase the car and add an extended warrantee. This saves me on the mileage fees, although I'd still need tires.

I've also considered getting a similar car through their CPO program, and obviously a new vehicle is an option, too.

Any thoughts, recommendations, or experiences you can share?

I love the car, but worry that some impending issue could bite me - for instance, BMW replaced the entire engine about 9 months ago because it threw a rod. I suppose that means I have less wear on the engine, but it still scares me if I keep it.

Would buying/leasing a new vehicle give me more leverage on the lease return so I wouldn't have to dole out so much just to return my existing vehicle.

Thanks again for your input.

Tim

Back in 2004 I leased my first BMW an E60 545i, after 17 days the engine developed a crack in the block, I am not so sure it was not pre-existing when I leased the car,but never the less, I went balistic as my dealer told me they had to replace the engine. Here in Canada we do not have a lemon law and as soon as you sign on the dotted line, the car is yours for better or worse. I must have called everyone at BMW Canada and even wrote to BMW in Germany . I finally hooked up with a decent guy at BMW Canada and he promised me that they would replace the engine and if I had any problems the would discuss buying the car back. The dealer gave me a loaner as my car was out of service for over a month as they had to bring the engine in from Germany . BMW goodwilled me for 3 months of lease payments, threw in a few gifts and replaced the engine , I drove that car for 39 months and never had another problem with the car.
In view of the fact that they replaced your engine, I would not worry to much about it.

As far as replacing your Run Flats, there are a few members here on this forum that are selling their run flat tires that they took off their cars when they got them to switch into other tires, I would see if you can buy them, you will get them at a fraction of the cost, I did the same on a recent 2012 535 that I returned early on a lease and the tires were perfect, I drove on them for 4 months before I gave back my car .

You have stated in your post that you will have done 26,000 miles in the course of your 3 year lease, this is not a lot of mileage for this car so if you opt to buy it back and keep the car you would still have a good car. With this said , I recently terminated my lease on my 2012 535X1 with 5 months left to go on the lease , I got into a new 2015 535x1 for about the same payments I was paying on my 2012, had I kept my 2012 I too would have gone over on my mileage and it would have cost me $2500.00 plus a front brake job for another $ 1,000.00. So for me it was a no brainer to end my lease and start another one on a current model car. There was some LCI improvements on the F10 in 2014 so my 2015 had a few improvments that I really liked.

I would advise you to at least go see your dealer and see what kind of deal you can get on a remaining 2015, BMW should offer you an incentive on leasing a 2015 , plus you will get a preferred interest rate on the new lease as a returning client. You may even be able to convince the dealer to forgive the excess mileage charges, If your car is in great condition and with the low mileage you have on it , the dealer may decide to buy back you car to get you into a new lease with them . ( Actually you should have approached them about this 3 months ago ). In any case go see what kind of deal you can negotiate and how it changes your monthly payments on your current vehicle, you may be very surprised. Tell your dealer you ahve been looking at an Audi A6, this should ge them hot to resign you. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Sorry I misread your post, you will have 55,000 miles on your car at the end of your lease so that amounts to 18,000 miles a year, still not serious mileage for this car

You can purchase miles for $0.16/mile 1 days before lease ends so that's $1760. For the tires, get the same brand/model RFT on ebay for around $90 each and another $50 install at your local tire store.

If you are getting another BMW, lots of dealers will waive those charges and you can terminate the lease early.

If having to put out more cash than you want to cover the over mileage is something that you are trying to avoid, then you could always roll it into you next lease. I did this when I leased my second 3 series. It helped me at the time, but I ended up with a lease pay,eat that was higher than it needed to be.
