Turbo lag - I miss the instant push from standstill.
I have recently converted to diesel. My last cars were BMW E39 523i and E60 525i (170 and 192 hp, respectively).
I am quite pleased with the push in my 525d (204 hp), however I miss that instant push from standstill. I understand this has to do with turbo lag. This is particularly annoying when trying to enter a roundabout before that other car that is inside. With my 525i I pushed the accelerator deeply and the car pushed me strongly inside the roundabout. My diesel car first glide weakly in and THEN comes the strong push - when I don't need it Just for curiousity: Will this be the same for the newer petrols with turbo and smaller displacement compared to the old petrols (bigger displacement, no turbo)? Any comments on this from those of you converting to a newer petrol? Could tuning help reducing the turbo lag of the 525d? I know my 6 cylinder engine is a down tuned version of the same engine that sits in a 530d with 245 hp. |

I think it's the auto shift more then the turbo lag. Downshift using the paddles before entering the roundabout in order to put in manual mode (2nd or 1st gear) and you won't have any lag.

This is my biggest disappointment with diesel. Strange how many that has been bragging about diesel never mentioning this. |

I'm sure it would..... but, while the UK Government want me to single-handedly solve the UK debt problem by taxing me to within an inch of my life, I'll stick with more tax friendly company cars, saving me money for my weekend 'toys'

Throttle response and precision is a weakness with turbodiesels in general, not just BMW and actually BMW are among the best in the industry, but it's still not the same as a petrol engine. You're right that it's never really mentioned in reviews. Perhaps the average person doesn't notice. It's why I picked the hybrid instead of 535d because it is a performance match to 535i or 535d and within 10% of the diesel's fuel consumption, so the best of both worlds. If fuel was free and there were no tax implications, how many people would buy the diesels? Not as many as now, I'm sure.

I also have this problem with my 520d automatic. I´m sure it´s the automatic gearbox that makes this problems. It feels like the car has problem to choose between which gear it should select.

I have 525d xdrive and just had a Throttle Response upgrade fitted to my car. The results are very very good. I highly recommend it. You can also try a Tuning Box along with it.
