Why no Remote Start?
Why doesn't BMW have Remote Start? You would think that on a new 2011 535i this would be a no-brainer. In reality I doubt I would use it much, but it seems like just about every other car company offers this feature.

Remote start is a concept that no upstanding German could possibly employ. Its illegal to "warm up" your car, let alone start it while making bacon and eggs in the kitchen.
Just a guess ...

I'm sure there are some aftermarket kits, though, if you're interested. Maybe something like this: http://www.slickcar.com/productdetai...ProductID=4724 |

Its nice to know there are upstanding global citizens working constantly to reduce global carbon emissions. But then they need to reduce the speed limit on the autobahn and not make anything other than 520d's

Remote start would not fit very well with the "Efficient Dynamics" concept. Instead the car has air flaps between the kidney grille and the radiator that closes the air when engine is cold. This makes the engine heat up faster when you start driving right away. |

My 2008 335 had a button labelled REST that allowed me to keep the heat on with the engine off after driving, I don't see that button on my F10. I guess they forgot it, now I have to idle the car while waiting for someone when it's below freezing.

Most folks travel at almost typical speeds on the autobahn, the discipline of driving is unparalleled.

I would agree. The reality of wasted emissions during a warm up idle does not fit with the Efficient Dynamics theme. On top of that, I would take the heated seats and steering wheel over any other on the lot. These both heat up very quickly, even compared to older Bimmers I have had. |

btw the substitute to the autobahn in HK is to drive your 5 like a ferrari -stay in 1st gear all the time, from traffic light to traffic light, it amuses the taxi drivers, but beggars can't be choosers |

Just press the "increase fan/ventilation" button when the engine is off (and still warm). It will use the heat still there, until the engine is cold or battery risks to become uncharged. It is in the manual.

Letting the engine run in stationary is bad for the engine. Especially if you're doing it for a long time in winter just to heat up the car.
So, why would you wanna have remote start? For this situation, get auxiliary heating instead. Or a garage.
