So the dealer did an oil change on my 2013 550 and used 0w-30. The next day my car was at minimum oil level. After that, the car would smoke like the valve stem seals were leaking. I would need to put in a quart of oil every 200 miles. After about a month of putting in 5w-30, the smoking has somewhat stopped. Did the 0w-30 mess up anything? I know the cats could get clogged.

0w30 is too thin, less engine protection and more oil burning.

for your next oil change, go for 5w40 liqui moly, shell rotella, motul, amsoil, etc.

one of those oils with a 5w40 weight will stop oil burning further

its literally the best oil you can buy for your engine and half the price of everything else on the market. it is becoming increasingly popular with people on these forums, especially the e90 track guys for its impressive protection properties. it has shown to hold up very well over BMW's OCI. I have changed to it during my recent oil change and I am very impressed. smooth and quiet engine operation, silent lifters on cold starts. my car seems to like it alot. this stuff is fine to use with gasoline motors. I would only be concerned if your engine burns tons of oil, where some of the additives may poison cats. but this stuff slows oil burning so you would likely be fine.

thats bullshit.. BMW spec's 5w/30 or 5w40 for these engines. they wouldnt otherwise if it was actually bad for your turbo lines.

BMW is actually already using 0w30 LL12FE in a number of vehicles, and its listed as a replacement for the 5w30 LL01 currently specified for most engines.

There is a SIB out on this and I suspect many if not most dealers have already made the switch.

Plus the 0 is only when the oil is cold.. 5w30 and 0w30 are both 30 weights when at operating temp!!

many dealers have already made this switch. however, my 2011 manual specifies 5w30/5w40 and makes no mention of a zero weight.

if you havent noticed the trend, all modern vehicles are now making the switch to a 0w, but this is only in north america due to the CAFE requirements. please look it up if you are interested. to sum it down quickly, 0w-20 is now widely used in new vehicles for a roughly 0.2mpg increase which when added up with every vehicle a manufacturer makes is a notable difference. (Corporate Average Fuel Economy)

yes, you read that right. 0w oils are spec'ed purely for fuel economy purposes, with absolutely zero concern taken into consideration for rod bearing protection which in turn will suffer. driving aggressively with a 0w in your engine is death to rod bearings.

I just had some work done on my car from BMW Northwest (oil was leaking, they fixed the gasket) and they put in 6.5L of 0W-30.
