Thumbs down F10 550i Stalling on Cold Start - ZF 8HP Sport Auto (SAT)

Hi friends,

Just picked up a CPO 2014 550i M Sport with the Sport Automatic 8 speed transmission w/ 28k miles. Since this is a 2014 it has the N63TU engine - not the N63.

The transmission is generally very smooth and responsive, other than a little bit of hesitation here and there (especially from a stop.. put the pedal down sometimes and it takes a good 2 seconds before anything happens). But most significantly, the engine will stall out on a cold start if I accelerate to about 10mph and then let off the gas. The rpms jerk violently from 1000rpm to 200rpm back and forth until the car stalls out. The entire car shakes along with it and it is very apparent something is wrong.

After turning the car back on, it's magically perfect like nothing ever happened and the transmission shifts perfectly ???

It feels like the transmission needs some sort of reset or update, so I found this thread, and this one, but I am hesitant to try and reset the throttle settings and end up having the dealership not able to replicate the issue.

Has anyone else had similar issues, if so what was the problem/resolution? FYI this is all in a very temperate climate, 70-80s, dry, etc.

Taking it to the dealership tomorrow.

You just got the car...any issues should be taken to the dealer. Let them worry about it since it's a CPO. Definitely let them know tho the issues you're having

Yeah already got a sweet video of it and gave it to them. Including glorious, violent shaking of me and the car as it shits out.

Hoping it's nothing serious. Will update when I hear back.

This became a habit for me in the last few years, with BMW and other brands I owned. At one point I just got tired of hearing how things like these are "normal behavior" or "unable to reproduce", now I try to have it on my phone before I go in. Posting on youtube and sharing with your SA only takes few minutes.

Good luck.

Well she's still at the shop, I guess they had to order a bunch of parts and didn't let me know what else was going on beyond that and some "programming." Won't be ready til next week... Really sucks.

The car has never had any history or record of large service items or early maintenance, so hopefully the parts ordered are related to the other things I brought it in for (cracking cosmetics, ventilated seats)

Stuck at the shop over the weekend due to holiday, some parts not arriving until Tues.

Have officially hit the point where I have not had the car more than I've actually had possession of it since ownership.

Car is still in programming ? They said it might be done tomorrow. Very difficult to get a hold of anyone at the dealership that knows anything. My Service Advisor has yet to actually answer a call when I've called in, just getting this info from very short text messages that take hours to reply to.

Maybe I have been spoiled with SAs that take time to call me and explain what's going on with my past 5 BMWs? This is awful!

Will continue to enjoy my $60k enterprise ford focus in the meantime.

Yeah that was the original request when I brought it in.

6th day at the dealership. Still have not had the Service Advisor pick up the phone once, nor have they called me since last week. The kid on the phone said the car is still in programming and then transferred me to the SA, went to voicemail. Has been in programming for 6 days now.

thats seems kind of long. Mine got stuck on the Steering module once during programming but that only caused a delay with a total of 3 hours of programming.
6 days??? wtf?

You know, long weekend and all, people take day off before/after sometimes.

If it's large dealership, sometimes cars stay longer than needed, as they simply forget about them for a day or so since they have lots to deal with. Not saying it's right, but if you have a free loaner, as long as they eventually address all the issues, it's not so bad.

Welp, issue came back.

I am really at a loss at what to do, the car is perfect otherwise but I am very concerned about this becoming an issue down the road. I don't want to be the idiot that ignored a huge red flag and then got screwed out of warranty.

Obviously when the car stalls shortly after starting there is a serious issue it's just hard to reproduce since it's only on a cold start and only happens intermittently. I have multiple videos of it happening though.

Maybe I should call corporate? Car has been out of service for ~3 weeks total since I owned it for this issue from 3 dealership visits.

thanks for the updates, looking forward to more, good luck with the car.

May want to look in to CA lemon Laws, if a car goes back to the dealership 3x for the same reason you may have the Law on your side with BMW NA.

When i Bought my 03 e39 540i in 2005, it was a Florida Car, car fax showed it went back to the dealer 3-4x for the same issue (leaky sunroof)

At that time my credit union wouldn't finance it, even though i was putting 40% down, until i was able to find out the cause of the issue and get the service records.

Turns out the previous owner of the car used to park it under a tree most of the time at work with the sunroof tilted up, which cause the drain holes to get clogged. So when it rained it leaked inside the car.

Just something to consider.

I never had this issue, and i kept the car for 10 yrs and 90k miles before selling it!

Yes - No parts were replaced but they did a full transmission software update which took almost an entire week to download from their servers and flash, also it was over a weekend as well which may be why it took so long.

Would be really sad if I had to do a buyback, car is literally perfect and got a great deal on it, certified warranty thru 2020, maintenance through 2018, low mileage, features I was shopping for, etc.

Worst part is taking it back to the dealer and getting an X1 loaner for weeks at a time, such a waste. I called BMWNA the first time around and they were pretty rude, denied any compensation for the first 2 weeks. Car was back in the dealership 2 days after purchasing from this.

In hindsight maybe I should've returned it right away and claimed it was a flawed vehicle.. Too late for that but we'll see what corporate says. I will try the dealer one more time then call corporate if it comes back.

Also I'll post the video of it happening here so you guys can see it. It is a very specific sequence of events:

1. start car
2. disengage parking brake
3. put car into Drive
4. large dip in RPM from ~1500 to 500, then back to 1000
5. lightly accelerate
6. car stalls

If I tried to sell the car later on private party and someone saw this happening, they would absolutely back out of the purchase.

avoid the dealership

avoid they dealership as much as you can. they are scummy and only interested in making money.

the throttle hesitation is a known issue with the ZF and isnt just with your engine.

an ECU tune should solve this problem. try to avoid throttle remap things such as BMS powerbox.

Seems you have a recent burst of posts regarding an issue that seems to follow all recent (2011+) years of BMW engines, but I really can't tell which, if not all, you are including.

Are you still having an issue and if so, with which car? Nothing as of yet has shaken my confidence in my purchase, probably due to being a CPO and also buying the extended warranty, but following your referenced posts as well as your direct posts, leave me somewhat confused.

Not experiencing any issues with my car, but seeing 'old' issues mentioned, as they could potentially not be old issues after all (maybe), since they seem to span across the year models, gives me the creeps. Not actually the creeps, but please clarify.

His car is CPO so if he avoids the dealership the OP will have to pay everything out of pocket rather then having BMW foot the bill.

Good luck to the OP, the car stalling is definitely not normal.

Hi, yes the issue is still rampant. Very unfortunate. It's actually getting even worse- Starting to become clear that this is not a transmission issue but some sort of major engine hesitation problem. Not only does the car stall about 10% the time after first acceleration (after a cold start) but the hesitation/jerk is violent now 100% of the time - like rock in your seat back/forth kind of thing until the car sputters forward. Something is definitely WRONG.

I will initiate a buyback with BMW Corporate if they don't fix it the next time around. I bought this car for the long haul 4-5 years and it was literally acting up the weekend after I drove it off the lot after purchase. Really disappointed.

This will be the 3rd time at the dealership for this issue. 31k miles 550i with the "Upgraded" V8 N63TU Engine (2014) and ZF 8 Speed Sport Auto.

No mods, the car's history is good otherwise, all other systems/functionality working good for now. Although I had some cosmetic items repaired in the interior (blown speaker, seat rattles/squeaking, cracking plastics, frozen iDrive controller, snapped floor plastics, replaced entire ceramic gear selector/plastic snapped off)

Also the dealership damaged my "BMW M" door liner decals while removing the seat frame last time around - they had to replace the entire seat frame to fix the horrible squealing noise I was experiencing while driving and there is a huge gauge in my inner door now. Luckily it only hit the plastic areas...
