Are you sure it includes cosmetic damage? If so, maybe. Pot holes here on LI destroyed one of my wheels but the rim still held air so it wouldn't be covered. BMW tire and wheel insurance doesn't cover cosmetic damage.

Try Allstate Tire and Insurance. I paid $1,000 for 3 years on 19" Lexus wheels here in NJ. I imagine it's slightly higher for BMW.

I bought it at a dealership, but it's third party and does include cosmetic damage. I blew two tires this week alone at $500 a pop, so I went ahead and bought it. The potholes in NJ are unbelievable and I'm certain that over 5 years I'll get the money back, or at least get very close.

I love that it covers cosmetic damage as well. A little expensive but probably worth the money.

The thing with these type of insurance purchases, you only "win" if things go bad for you. It "may" be worth it if you cause some damage to your wheels and rims over next 5 years.

So, the question is, once you spend quite nice chunk of change on insurance, what do you hope for? To wreck at least one tire and rim and get some of your money back is reasonable expectation I guess ? If it's me, I'd set it aside and "pay as I go" if and when I damage tires and rims. Might cost me more, but might not, why pay in advance? Not saying you did the wrong thing, for your situation, you know the best, just offering different point of view.

9 months of ownership, I'm out approximately $1000 because of potholes.
That does include ditching Goodyear RF tires after pothole hit and sidewall burst. Maybe "my number" should be adjusted a bit, as I had 1 flat and replaced 4 tires at once as a result... not to mention it's in Canadian dollars, kinda big deal these days.

On a more serious topic, friend of mine claims that his Mercedes Benz service told him, for whatever it's worth, that wheels for his and our cars are made softer on purpose as they are "cheaper to replace on impact than suspension parts".

Its not worth it man. I drove all around the tri state. Mostly Rutgers New Brunswick and I was slammed on coilovers and stretched tires on a 10 inch wide rim. Just keep your eye on the road and you'll avoid most things. I never blew a single tire.

Do it up. You definitely need that tire and rim living in Jersey, trust me I'm from there too. Cosmetics might have a lot of conditions applied to what is going to be covered.

Not sure about the softer rims part. but agree that suspension is more expensive. My retired E60 had a severe hit on the left rear rim that bent most of the aluminum suspension on the left side. The cost for parts alone was $3000 plus installion, etc.

The run flats could be part of the problem. Their extremely hard side walls transmit pothole energy directly to the rim instead of flexing like normal tires.
My F10 is my first car with run flats. It is also the first car that I've had with three bent rims (slight bends that didn't require replacement. They were properly balanced and there is no vibration). Repairs would be approximately $100 to $200 per rim.
As far as tires, one winter Dunlop was replaced due to a 3.5" screw(cost $408), which is not the tires fault.
One summer LS2 was replaced this week due to two sidewall bubbles(cost $380).
This is after three years of ownership and no insurance. The BMW Tire and Rim insurance was offered for $1640 at the time of purchase. It was for 4 yrs or 160,000km up to $6000 of claims.

In my case, I believe in self insuring as problems occur.

In 3 1/2 years of ownership of my wife's E92, she has gone through 10 tires and at least cracked 3 rims. She drives from LI to NYC 4 days a week for work and is very cautious when it comes to potholes. If she didn't have the tire/wheel insurance we would have gotten rid of the car. Bottom line, if you live in an area where you know the roads are going to get crappy, get the insurance or be prepared to shell out even more over the lifetime of the vehicle with RFTs.

You guys don't put on off road tires to go on the track right? Why ride on low profile tires in New York?

Honestly I think it has more to do with the RFTs than being a low profile. I used to run low profile tires on my Mustang and never had a tire/wheel issue.
