Personalized license plate for my new F10 ...question

I have never had a personalized license plate before but I want one for the new F10.

I am in California and I went to the site

https://xml.dmv.ca.gov/IppWebV3/welcome.do

I have found a nice personalized plate that has not been taken yet. Tried so many times too. I never knew it was that hard to get the good one that has not been taken.

Anyway, do I need to wait for the actual car before I can order it or can I order it and just keep it before I actually make the purchase of the car? I don't want mine to be taken.

My understanding of how the process worked at one time (it may be different now). You order the customized plate now and pay a one-time fee now. When the plate comes in, you bring in the plates you want to replace to the DMV and they give you the personalized plates. Apparently your new plates can be held a little while before being released if you don't claim them.

So I don't think you need the car now to order the plate. But you'd need it eventually. Keep in mind that when you get a new car it could take as long as 2-3 months to get your new plates. And you must have them before you can put on the personalized ones (I think). So that may eat your time window. The timing will be tricky.

So what would be the best time to buy the new car and order the personalized license plate? How long would it take for the personalized plate to be finisned once it has been ordered?

Are you saying that I have to do a switch of plates?

I tried ordering plates from that site and it keeps saying 'system unavailable.'

Not in California. All dealers can do is give you the same information the DMV will give you. In California you order the plate. It gets sent to your local DMV branch you specify when you order it. You get a letter from the DMV when the plates come in. You schedule an appointment and bring in the plates and registration off your car you want to exchange with the personalized plates. The DMV gives you the personalized plates and switches your registration to the new plates. That's how it works in California.

Order the plates after you purchased the car so everything is pending with the new plates coming in with the car. My friend ordered personal plates and it took about 2 months before he got a letter saying the plates are ready for pick up and he needs to bring in the old plates in exchange for the custom ones.
