What advice should I give my old man about replacing his summer tires????

My old man owns a 2012 535i. It either has the sport package or the M package, because the wheels are 245/40/19 all around.

BMW is quoting him $2,700 for a set of winter tires (no rims!) and he think that's too steep. Both the BMW store and an independent tire shop told him he had to get run-flats as replacements.

What advice should I give him, to save some coin and some headaches?

Is it true that he has to get run-flats or else risk voiding the warranty?

If he decides to go with non run-flats, can his current summer tires be removed safely, or should he buy a separate set of wheels?

I was thinking of telling him to buy a spare wheelset/tires that are 18"...if that's possible...

try tirerack.com, their recommendations are usually spot on.

Can anyone confirm if these tires+rims will fit my dad's 2012 535xi sport package?

Yes, they'll fit.
You can even fit 17" OEM F10 wheels, only the 550 needs 18" OEM wheels because of larger brakes.

I purhased a tire / wheel set at KAL Tire (western Canada chain that has outlets in Toronto & Ottawa). This, and I'm sure others, will be able to set up your dad for less cost for wheels & tires than BMW. I purchased Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter runflat tires with aftermarket rims, and it cost me, including installation & tax, about $2700. I went with 18" x 8" wheels, and 245 / 50 / 18 tires (oversized, but work very well).

Cheers.
