Option 1: Get a phillips head screw driver and do it yourself. It will take you 30min and cost you maybe $50.

Option 2: Talk to service manager and tell him his service rep has a poor attitude.

Option 3: Talk to service manager, let them know their prices are ridiculous and they have lost you as a customer. Take your car to an independent, which is perfectly capable of changing your oil and swapping your air filter. It will probably cost 1/2-2/3 the dealership.

Option 4: Suck it up, knuckle under, pay the dealership $400 for 30min of work.

Were you trying to convince the SA that it should take 10 minutes to change the filter? As far as I know, dealer service rates are not negotiable, and I seriously doubt you can do it in 10 minutes. For the first timer with good mechanical skills, maybe one hour. You know that if you change your own oil, it can save you probably around $60. I do agree that $300-$400 seems high for a filter change, the going price around here is around $150 to $200, then again, there is plenty of competitions where I am.

Bad Evap coil was the culprit on my 328 last year. Have them check it out. 3000 dollar job, hope you still have a warranty.

Same here. Dealership quoted me $350 for engine+cabin. I bought both and did it myself for less than $100. Engine air filter is super simple. Basically, remove cover and replace. Cabin is definitely trickier and will take finesse because the airbag console is in the way. There's also a cable that can't be removed so the cover is literally just hanging while you're trying to get your hands up there. It shouldn't take more than 30 min though.

I'll do it myself before I have the dealership rip me off! Thanks to whoever posted the YouTube video!

They are totally negotiable over here. You just need to provide quotes from their local competitors/other dealers and they will try and at least meet you part way.

Agree Sytner will generally price match, however based upon how simple this looks I'd probably just do it myself...

My dealer actually did a pretty good job of price-matching a local indy. He was a few bucks more, but his effort to keep my loyalty was worth it. He has also worked with me on other things.

For you North County guys (or feel it's worth the drive) Mike at BMW Escondido is an EXCELLENT SA!!!!!

I just replaced them on my 550 about two weeks ago. Parts from the dealer were around $100 for OEM charcoal filters and took about 20-25 min. You will need a T20 torx screwdriver or bit. Fairly easy to do. When installing, make sure you put them in correct (there is a direction of airflow arrow on them). I also stuck a the blue BMW airfreshner between the folds of the filter so the whole car smells amazing now )))
