WOW this a very heated debate gentlemen. good stuff. I have yet to drive my F10 550 as it gets here next week. I have looked at a couple of the online personal reviews and the consensus is the same " this car feel alot faster than you expect it to be and way faster than it looks". Athought these are two way different animals, we as BMW drivers will undoubtedly stick up for the one we own or are more used to while still respecting the other. It does seem to me that the 440 lb-ft of torque on the 550 will play out nicely when in full acceleration. This engine is pretty de tuned and a few mods will surely deliver alot more. In the end I guess its all in the driver. Either you like to go very fast in luxurious comfort or you like to go wild fast with a rougher ride. The wild child versus the gentleman. Choose your path.

I don't know but after viewing this video of a 550i vs. a Jeep SRT8, I have to think the 550i is much faster. The Jeep is slightly modded and they are a rocket off the line. This was indeed surprising as the title of the video states.

I went from a 2012 M3 to a 2012 550i x-drive and it the 550i is noticably quicker. As stated earlier, the M3 only felt fast at the top of the rev range which isnt really usable in everyday driving. The 550 with 450 ft/lb or torque is much better in all around driving. The M3 with <300 ft/lb in the city was not quick and the power wasnt really useful until the high RPM's. My 2 cents..

But you went from an M3 vert, which is so slow compared to coupe or sedan even.
I drove the 550i, it's a decent fast car, but no way near my M3. I get blurred vision when really pushing my M3 maybe the LCI 550i with the power bump to 450 hp would be some sort of a match, will see...

Also in normal driving the M3 feels faster, probably because of the sounds it makes But what is normal to me may not be normal to you, and vice versa However, if I am not careful with the gas pedal I get a lot of wheel spin in the M3, and that means it's got a lot of torque at the wheels

I have beaten many M3's in my tuned 550i.
An M3 is fast but it isnt the end all. Besides majority of M3 drivers have no clue how to drive it correctly.

The thing with any F10 the sensation of speed is deceptive in this car because of all the sound isolation and the rock solid chassis. I always find my self way above the speed limit and not realize it until i look down at the tach.
I would imagine the acceleration between the 550 and M3 to be very similar even though they don't feel like it. Here's a video i found of a M3 vert against a 550. Both stock. The M3 coupe would probably be pretty even or only barely edging out the 550. A simple tune for the 550 will be game over for the M3. (start watching at the 30sec mark)

M3 drivers cannot accept it. Of course it depends on a driver, but the main reason is the torque. New M3/M4 are going to have double more torque so that will end the discussion

Having owned a 2004 M3, 2007 M5, 2010 M3 and now a 2012 550i x drive M sport I will add my .02
I think all the M cars outhandle the 550i in every department. Stock for stock the 550i is just way too much of a luxury car and a boat considering its the size of an older 7 series. However, this is definitely THE best interior I've had. In terms of the OP's question in regards to straight line acceleration. I believe the 550i only bests the 2001 M3 in all speed ranges. In terms of 0-60, the 550i may hang with or slightly edge out the newer M3 and E60 M5 but will definitely fall behind at higher speeds. The M's lack of low end torque was not designed for traffic light renegades. BMW M cars really do reign supreme on highways and at highway speeds. I plan on getting a Dinan ECU tune and maybe that will liven up the engine a bit more, but at my current stage in life I enjoy sitting pretty in the 550i's interior and do not regret the change one bit. In the M cars I was always being harassed to rev my engine or race - the 550i is definitely a sleeper. |

Really? That's what I was hoping to hear. Have you seen a bigger drop off in fuel consumption? Or is that not even relevant when the boost is raised.

Thanks all for confirming what I stated, and that video certainly clarified. The lack of low end torque hurts the M3 everywhere except on a track. However,I drive on the streets and the 550i will take it everyday.
