550i trip fuel range

For what its worth ...

Took my 550i (Hartge tuned) on a trip deep into France. Since France is rife with speed cameras and was in no particular hurry, I decided from my home (on the french border) I would lock in my cruise control at 138kmh (130kmh speed limit) and see how far I can get. It was a early Saturday morning and was expecting little to no traffic. When I started out the range said 520 km's for range (based on historical driving behavior), in 8th gear at 138kmh the rpm was about 1900 and was able to push out a range of 775 km's.

I was very pleased with this and wondered in America with speed limit of 65mph, in an imaginary world, if one could drive accident and traffic free for 6 hours straight, what would my range be, lol.

In three weeks will pick up my 550 in South Carolina and drive 900 km home. Will be new, not broken in, but essentially all limited access Interstate (for those who know, I 40). I will post range here.

I just picked up my 550i last weekend so my data points are rather limited but in the first week, driving very conservatively during the break-in period on the flat terrain around here, with probably 90% freeway miles @ 65-70 mph I got 226 miles on 9.2 gallons. If I extrapolate this and with strictly freeway driving I should be able to get close to 450 miles range and at 65 mph this would be easily in excess of 6 hours. I'm pretty happy with this considering the power the car has and as the break-in ends I won't get that mileage but it isn't any worse than the Infiniti V6 (306hp/268ft-lbs) I traded-in for the 550i and the 550i is a lot more fun.

agreed, the range of 775 km's roughly equates to 520 miles. I found using cruise control almost entirely increased range over not using it.

Normally my range on a full tank is about 300 miles, just please to know that if need be the efficiency (dare I use the word) is there.

Also, in theory, my range might be higher then yours because my engine is tuned provided less energy to achieve / maintain desired speed.

Yea, I think a few Frenchies felt EMPOWERED passing me up on the left! I give them their day in the sun, afterall, it was on French soil, the Bavarian Beast had to remain docile
