Next 5 series dash board opinion
Judging by how the F10 dash board was not far off the 7 series F01, I guess a strong possibility the next 5 dash will resemble the new 7 series just out.
I am not sure I like it, the 5 is maturing with every new release more toward comfort and all, I guess the 3 series in few years will be the old 5, maybe the fact we also aging will just ride on along. |

I dislike the new trend everybody seem to be going towards, LCD screens sticking out of the dash. I much prefer the F10 way, where it's seamlessly integrated in the dash. Also on this particular photo, I feel that gap between the center console, around the cup holders/shifter towards climate controls on the dash is simply lacking "flow" we have in F10 today - this one looks kinda disconnected to me.
It's not a bad look, and nothing's drastically changed, fairly classic, not flashy look, which in my view is good, but those are the things I'd change. |

I'm not a fan of the "i-pod" screen, I much prefer a sleek dash with integrated screen, even if it's a bit lower and you have to look down at it.

It has an identity crisis. Doesn't know if it wants to be a 3 series or a 7 series. I always hated the tablet looking screen in the middle of the dash. Some crackhead might break your windshield thinking they can steal it haha

I quite like it, as with most new models it takes time to adjust to the new look and pictures don't always do it justice. Physically sitting in the car and appreciating the quality of materials/fit and finish can greatly influence my initial thoughts on a design.
I think that if the new 5 has this look it won't have as much of the aluminium as the 7 has in it's dash design |

New interior
I like the look BUT I certainly hope they address the trim durability issue. Seems many (myself included) have complained about the trim material (whether wood or aluminum) scratches very easily and is difficult to polish/remove scratches.

The switch to a floating screen in the F30 was a huge step forward in eliminating the bulky shroud around the screen in the E90. I had no complaints with this setup in my last F30 328i, as it put information in my line of sight and let the cabin feel more airy. I look forward to this change in the 5-series, but I hope it does not have quite the amount of metallic surfaces as in the new 7, unless there is an option for an anodized or brushed gunmetal finish in M Sport variants. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with lightly textured matte black plastic for secondary controls.

Amazing how a professional photograph can make such cheap materials look good.

I too don't like the screen "just sticking out" of the dashboard. even if there are no regulations in place to put this higher up and in the eye line I still feel it could be integrated into the dash like the current 5 and 7 (sorry old 7 now!).
Even though the materials may be good quality and I've see a new 7 in the BMW showroom in park lane in London, it still looks silly to me. It seems to be a fashionable thing at the moment with at least Audi and Mercedes doing the same. I'm not impressed by it at all and it puts me off. I personally don't like the chrome either , again it looks cheap to me even if it real aluminium , it just reminds me of cheap chromed plastic. I prefer a darker colour personally but I know that's going to be a personal thing. I'm sure there will be many on these forums that like it. I think the current 5 series is pretty damn good, as good in quality as the previous E39 (didn't think the E60 was a good in that department...) I'd really love to have a chat with the designers and who signed off on the new idrive display sticking out and understand why they have done what they have and why integrating it in the dashboard was not an option. |

From Scott26
-Not a leak. But an idea to show the "Reverse 7er " philosophy used within the new 5er.-

Like pointed out in few responses I really dislike the lack of flow between the centre section and the dashboard, I find the current 6 series dash one of the best around purely down to the line from the centre consol going all the way up, even with the floating screen, they managed a good job out of it.

Why is the Idrive always positioned away from the drivers side?
I thought it was just a RHD thing but looking at the above shots clearly not On mine I find almost impossible to quickly read the buttons as they seem tilted to the passenger. very odd! |

I hope that this is not the final picture of the new 5 Dash, IMO, it looks to be more of an update to exisiting Dash rather than what one would expect in a complete model change. I had Brushed Aluminum Trim in my previous MSport F10, if you live in a cold climate you would not believe how cold this material gets when the car is sitting outside all day in sub freezing temperatures. It takes forever to warm up. I would never order a car with this trim again .
While the pop up NAV screen is not exciting me , I wonder how the open/close function performs in freezing temperatures. I much prefer the current configuation that I had in my previous 3 F10's and E60 and my New F10 which will be delivered in December .
