I think the chances of the next M5 being offered with a manual are near zero. I don't think BMW has (nor will they design one) a powerful enough manual clutch to handle the torque that beast will hammer out.

Both the 550i and the M5 were available with a manual transmission in Germany. I'm sure it wasn't any different in other European countries.

Manual in the E60 m5 was only offered in NA. For other markets it was only available with smg. Maybe same road for the F10 m5.

This is the first I've heard of. AFAIK, only NA had manual for e60 m5.

Seriously? Just because transmission technology has progressed to the point of offering transmissions like the Steptronic w/paddles and DCT means we all need to accept it and forgo traditional manuals? Screw that. Yes, automatics and DCT's allow you to hold a gear, but I still prefer to physically select and engage that gear myself. I like the proven reliability of traditional manuals as well. I'm really curious to see the long term reliability and potential repair costs of the DCT and DSG transmissions in the future.

Going to have to say that was my thinking until this car.

I finally decided to really test out the automatics this time around, some are quite good, some are quite bad, and I'm almost to the point where I consider those that are quite good in the same class as good manual transmissions.

I ended up getting the auto in my 550i, and yes I did drive a manual one to compare.

Exactly. In the U.S. it's more unique and special to have a mt whereas in most countries mt is the standard and they view the auto as luxury.

BMW NA is smart to offer the mt. I had a c class in mt (entry level) and if the bigger engine mercedes came in stick, I might have gone that direction.

For me, driving with a manual is just plain more fun.

Personally I like driving a manual SUV, the whole control thing when you're offroading is a plus in my book. There's a reason the Defender only comes with a 6MT.

Maybe the Lexus, but Acura (Honda) has some of the best manual gearboxes around...

That's too bad, because the shifting action and clutch are very smooth in my 535i. Fun to drive.

it doesn't matter if it's smooth or not, it's a luxury car, it's like getting manual in 7 series or s class, you just simply don't do it...

the exodus has started...it sounds like many with manuals are also switching to f10 with 8sp sport. BMW plan to entice people with 2 different 8sp auto boxes seem to be working on moving more people to auto.

i suspect this is the last 5 series and hence the last of its class to even offer a manual. the next 3/F30 will certainly offer manual but will probably similarly have the 8sp sport as well as an option to entice drivers away from manual. and the f30 will probably be the last 3 to offer manual as well :O

I think the poll is skewed...

I'm surprised there was a manual F10 on the lot to test drive. I figured people looking for a manual would have to order their car.

That will be a sad, sad day if BMW no longer offers a traditional manual in their smaller cars like the 1, 3, and Z4.

For everybody. The future of transmissions is not manual

In this case, the auto tranny is way more "inteligent" and efficient than a classic manual 6 speed gearbox.

With emissions driving development, the trend towards 7 and 8-speed autos proving auto transmissions can be more fuel efficient, it is only common sense from the manufacturers point of view to move even more towards transmissions with integrated electronic control systems, which leave the 'inefficient' driver out of the shift point equation.

Purists and enthusiasts will always want the option for MT, but options will be more limited, IMO. Engines are going the 'efficiency' way as well, so smaller engines with forced induction is another departure from the purists choice.
