My daily driver is a 6-speed 2009 E82 135i which has awesome power and my weekend driver is a 2008 E60 M5. I have concerns about the longevity of the E82's twin turbos, and of course, the cost of post-warranty maintenance on M cars is well-known.
My daily driving car is the F10 535i 6-speed always a thrill commuting in Atlanta traffic, but been thinking about buying a E60 M5 i am a little concerned of the post-warranty maintenance too. How has your M5 been running for you? I've seen used 2009 M5 with 23,000 miles asking $50,000K for it. I think the price is too high what are your thoughts on the price?
I must say I do enjoy the options in my 535i but M5 hard to pass it up.

The performance gap between the 528i and the 535i this year is getting close. You can get tunings of the new N20 to produce the same power as the 535i.

the deal breaker for me with the 528i was when i looked under the hood for the 2012 model..... the engine is really really small, i know its faster than the previous one but when i open up my hood i want a nice big engine there not a tiny little thing. SO i went with the 535i looks better and the engine roar is very nice when driving.

+1, that N20 does look like it belongs in a Mini Cooper S.

I was just thinking about my decision to buy the N20 528i this morning. I remember test driving the car back in September, and I clearly remember being impressed by the engine and its performance. Having bought it, I am even more pleased than ever with the choice. I sprung for the new technology and the efficiency I would get out of it, while still enjoying the things that make a BMW a BMW. Many here will tell you bigger is better, and sure it is, there is always something bigger and better. But you need to know what you are going to need the car for.

The engine performs very well for my driving need, which are:
I commute 50+ miles each day in this car in stop and go traffic, windy back roads, and highway. Most of the driving is less than 30mph, with a few burst to 100mph when I have the chance
I don't race people at traffic lights
I don't take my car to the track
I don't lift up the hood to show the engine size, never really a reason to

What I do like:
I get BMW engineering
I get BMW handling
A beautiful car (inside and out)
The feeling of a solid machine (not a bunch of parts put together)
Quality
And the simple joy of pushing this car hard for a few seconds every now and then

The 528i is just right for me. Could I buy a 535? M5? Sure. But I don't need it. Now, if I lived in Germany, I certainly would consider a bigger engine

Bottom line. There is no right answer. Get what suits your needs

i dont race or open my hood up and show it off either.. (and im probably half your age) but when i clean the car and open the hood up for my self, i like to see a nice big full powerful engine. Thats just my opinion and what I like.

If this is how you feel, why didnt you get a 520d? Or the 523i? Or are they not available where you live?

Everyone will get the engine size that best suits their need for power against fuel economy so I agree with your bottom line.

The smallest engine you can get in N. America is 528i. No diesel engines are being offered as of now.
