Anyone with H&R springs on their GT?
Hi all,
as the title says; are there any members who have H&R springs? I'm looking for photos with OEM 20" wheels - if there any available please post them. This is the only one I found. Also other lowering springs are of interest - please post pics! Cheers R ***Update: H&R springs are now installed. Rear is set by using the adjustable ball joints supplied together with the springs - no need to electronically adjust the ride height. Now only front and rear spacers are needed...*** Last edited by Robbo335; 04-22-2011 at 03:13 AM.. |

Doesn't Hamann use H&R springs?
Anyway, this GT has 22" wheels but I wanted to see one with 20". Last edited by Robbo335; 03-30-2011 at 10:00 AM.. |

It looks slick, but you better have good insurance for the wheels and tires. Those rubber bands won't take much of any impact. Great looks, and probably handling on smooth roads, but not real-world in most.

Any opinions on ride quality on the springs?
I lowered my other car on coilovers, and given they are coils I could iteratively raise back up. The shocks perform better and better, as the height rises. So, I would expect our complex suspension to be even more sensitive as you lower it 35 mm. Any thoughts? Any pics????????? |

The ride quality seems to be more or less the same - I went from 19" RFT winter tires to H&R with 20" RFT sommer tires so there is some uncertenty here... It has a big influence if you lower the rear to much. When the setting is to low the ride was very stiff. After readjusting the ride hight it was much better.

Thanks for the reply Robbo335!
So, how low are you in the rear? I thought the drop was fixed at 30 mm. Any rubbing under hard cornering? Does the car feel like it can be driven harder? What about ground clearance - any scraping on driveway etc? Last edited by BaltimoreGT; 04-21-2011 at 02:57 AM.. Reason: more questions |

The H&R kit is supplied with an adjustable rod link for the rear axle- you can therefore set the ride height at wished level. If you just lower it by 20 mm there will be no real difference in ride comfort.
I chose c-c 69 mm whereas the standard c-c is 73 mm. |

Hi BaltimoreGT,
There is absolutely no rubbing! I plan to ad 10 mm spacers up front and 10 or 15 mm at the rear - there is plenty of space when using original wheels. The front springs are to lower the GT by 35 mm (1,4") and the rear is adjustable with the H&R rod links controlling the height of the air suspension. I have a hard time saying if it corners better or not as I simultaneously went from 19" winter to 20" summer tires. R Last edited by Robbo335; 04-22-2011 at 03:15 AM.. |

Robbo335, thanks for the reply!
This is great news. I also read Bimmer_man's response in another thread. It seems that the lowering springs are a great mod with little detriment. Bimmer man seems to believe cornering improved significantly. I like your car too. I am sure the summer tire package complicates your determination. That is a huge difference in grip. Enjoy the summer in that car - looks fun. |

Thats right!
the spacers are purely for looks - just to fill out the wheel arches! As my wheels are original BMW there is no risk for rubbing, not on the inside nor the outside.
I'll report back after they are put on the car! cheers R |

Any time that you move the wheel location out, you put more stress on the bearings because the lever arm is longer. While this may not be a major factor, it is a factor to be considered. Depending on the wheel design, it may also affect the brake cooling (probably insignificant). Depending on the spacer, tire, and wheel, it may also expose the body to more sand and stone chipping.

Lowering the rear (via an adjustable link) is unlikely to change the spring rate, so there is a risk of bottoming out something, since the wheel must be now closer to the body. It sounds like the self-leveling air suspension still has it's full travel, but now the space it has to travel is smaller. This is also likely to change the alignment angles (maybe for the better?) so you should watch the wear very carefully. Getting each side exactly the same would also be important.

Good luck, report back after you've put maybe 5K miles or so on it on handling, tire wear, and ride characteristics. |
