Did something change?

So this winter I have started to notice that my 2012 528i will activate Start/Stop now even when the outside temp is <37 degrees. Did something change here that I dont know of?

The only thing that has changed is that they updated the car's software when I went in for service this summer, so maybe the algorithm changed. Somehow I doubt it, so looking to see if others have experienced this

Thanks

My 535xi has activated stop/start even at 30F and occasionally lower, since it was new. It is rare, but happens when the motor is thoroughly warm and when I think the battery is fully charged.

Hmm, see mine NEVER did that. It never stopped when the temp was below 37 (as stated in the manual), so I am puzzled

Mine works at temperatures well below 0C/32F. Not as often as when it is warm outside but if the engine is warm enough it still works in the cold. Last winter even at -10C and colder it continued to work. I did have a software update over the summer, so maybe it doesn't work at those temps anymore, but it hasn't been that cold yet to be sure.

I think I would agree. This is my first car with start/stop. The other day here in Michigan it was about 25 degrees and I noticed it was not triggering start/stop. Looking at the on board manual it references temps below 37 F do not activate. But I would think if engine is warm and battery at full capacity it may take advantage of start stop. Guess I will see how it goes through the winter now that its colder. Otherwise not a big deal, take advantage of the start/ stop in the warmer months.

-17C this morning and as you can see, start/stop working as usual.

I've noticed this too, but I haven't had any software updates since new. I attribute it to the following: Battery state of charge, car's temperature, engine temperature vs outside temperature.

The difference between this year and last year for me is that my garage is now heated. So, when I leave in the morning, the garage is +15C even though it is -15C outside. I can get some use of the auto start/stop until the car adjusts to the outside temperature after which it stops working.

I'm betting Avimax (above) is coming from a heated garage to have ASS work at -17C. Am I right?

Nope. Car is coming from a garage, but not heated. Car indicated +5C in the garage. The ASS didn't work until the engine warmed up a bit and then it kept working as usual.

+5C compared to -17C is heated The ASS is supposed to work to 0C, but I have found mine will work to a lower outside temp as long as the battery is topped up and the car is coming from a warm environment. Actually, I don't mind the winter because I don't have to manually shut of the ASS every time I start the car like I do in the summer. The only time I leave it on is when I am stuck in an obviously long line of stop what and then go for a bit traffic, or I'm stopped to let a train pass.
