Voice Commands f10

I've got a 2013 LCI 520d M Sport with standard nav. Since I purchased the car last year the voice command hasn't worked. I've watched some videos on YouTube and on other cars pressing the button appears to result in a chime after which you say your command. On my car pressing the button does nothing, not even a prompt on the nav screen.

Now is it a case of my steering wheel has a voice button but the car isn't fitted for voice commands or is it fitted and not working. How do I tell which?

do you know if the car has option 620 "Voice control"? If not then that probably explains it.
It should ping when you hold down the button on the steering wheel and await your command.

When I got my F10 voice commands flummoxed me because they didn't seem to work, but with trial & error I found I was holding the button in too long, mine only works if I give the button a quick press & let go immediately.

I hardly use mine, just for dialling a phone number. should really it more as it can do quite a lot. The manual lists quite a large number of commands.

Some more info that some may find useful...

If you have paired your car to a iPhone. Keep holding the voice button for about 1 -2 second, and it switches to Siri mode...

Is your car the LCI or prior version?

I have all but given up with voice commands I never seem to say the right thing to get the desired response so now we just mess about with it to see what happens

It can get quite interesting if you treat it like a washing machine asking it to do a spin rinse or a boil wash can bring up some odd and entertaining responses

Yeah, it's pretty hopeless. I've had voice control on an E60 LCi, a 2012 F10 and a 2015 F10. At least I never paid extra for it. Even with fairly neutral accent it fails to recognise much if you do not simply choose words on the iDrive menus. It's better on SWMBOs Ford Kuga.

The worst is the online search in the navigation: the odds of it understanding what destination I am saying are longer than those needed to win the lottery...

I tried the same address at least 6 times today & was treated to a tour of the UK as it offered me destinations all over the country, but not the right one. I gave up after a while and used the iController touch pad to write the postcode, that works very well.

How very strange, I use it al the time, and as someone has said above, 90% of the time it works perfectly, so it is well used, didn't know about siri though!

I have Business Nav too, I also have a voice command button on my steering wheel which does nothing. I believe it only works with Pro Media.

Not to hand but it is in the back of the printed manual. (might also be on the electronic version in the idrive)

Download the free BMW driver's guide app, put in your VIN, you'll find it all in there if you search for "voice". It's on the app store and google play.

I wonder if the mic in UK cars is actually aware that the driver is on the right!

We went to a funeral in Derby on Thursday and on the way there and back I tried repeatedly to get the stupid thing to do various tasks it misunderstood me every time

So then Karen had a go... no problem at all understanding her in the passenger seat!

I will let her drive next time we are out and give it a go.
