i own 2013 550ix and currently not interested in moding. Maybe in future, might change my mind. But i would not get the 2014 just because it has some 40+ more HP.

If 2014 550 was on the lot yes, but to wait just because it has more horsepower or better lights. I say hell no. Why wait enjoy what you have now there is always something better down the road that's how they sell cars.

I think would be waste of money to upgrade from '13 to '14. I would think the people who bought the 2013, and especially those that lurk and post here, knew of the upgrade coming but bought anyhow...hopefully at a good discount.

Wouldn't any types of tune, if found/detected by the dealer, void the car's warranty?

Yes, it would. You have 2 options:
1. Be very good friends with your service advisors.
2. Remove the tune modules before you take it in for service. BMS is pretty easy to remove and install.

Dinan does not or at least they say that they match factory warranty.

A few questions about Dinan software. Is it a one time flash or you have to repeatedly get that in case your car goes for a regular service.

And how do they match factory warranty, do they repair themselves in case dealership denies.

Well, DINAN is not a BMW dealer. Your car will definitely be flagged by a BMW dealer if you have a tune in your car and are trying to claim some kind of a faulty engine warranty thing. They will try to relate the cause of the damage is the tune.

Also, for a regular service (regular oil change), I don't think you need to flash it again. I'm not sure about this, but maybe other members can confirm this

Yes, if the tune causes the damage, I would say they repair the car themselves.

I am planning to order one of the last 2013 in June. If I feela need for the extra power just get a quick fix with Dinan.

Exclamation

Ill advised or uninformed??

http://www.dinancars.com/about.aspx
Dinan’s comprehensive warranty program, introduced in 1996 with the cooperation of BMW of North America, provides BMW owners with matching coverage to that offered by BMW’s new car warranty, ensuring that Dinan performance enhancements and the BMW they have been installed in are covered for up to 4 years or 50,000 miles. BMW automobiles can now be performance-tuned without the associated concern of negatively affecting the new car warranty coverage, making the idea of enhanced driving fun and excitement appealing to a rapidly growing number of BMW drivers. In addition, Dinan Certified Pre-Owned high performance BMWs are now available through participating Dinan Authorized BMW Dealerships, offering matching warranty coverage to BMW's program.

Well having done many Dinan tunes almost 99% of them thru the dealership I can say at least in my experiences there have been no problems what so ever with the tune or having it done. All of them have been BMW dealerships and have had no problem not only doing the install but making sure their customer's knew that they would also stand behind it along with Dinan if anything went wrong. Can't say that for others tunes which may or may not cause problems with a dealer. But one good point here I must say is that my dealer KNOWS what tunes/mods I have as far as Dinan goes and its not something I have to hide from them or behind. I mean IF you gotta worry so much about your dealer detecting some install or ECU upgrade then I would say/think there may be real fears if/when something goes wrong with your car afterwards. So knock on wood I haven't had to test Dinan's warranty but if so at least I know I have both the dealer and Dinan to talk to who also have the financial resources behind the BMW vs a vendor someplace.

As for whether you need to re-update the car after services and such..no you do not have to do that. Only if for some reason ALL of your software is reset to baseline in the car (i.e. the point of manufacture) which I've never seen happen in like 7 BMWs Ive owned. In any event your Dinan upgrade is recorded among your service history and your dealership can do a complete restore at no additional cost to you. Upgrades between Stages (like stage 1 to stage 2); you just pay the price difference between the two.

Oh yeah... I wouldn't get a 2014 if I already had a 2013...I'd just got to Stage 3 or 4 and get it over with. Better HP/torque bump 4 me!

Now I have a Dinan Stage 2 2012 550xi MSport that's loaded; excl. TV's in the headrests, and I think I'll wait for the next "major" platform upgrade for the 5 series.

The only option on my car that truly disappoints me is Night Vision/Pedestrian Detection system. From what I've read on this forum BMW has dramatically improved the technology to warn of drivers of cyclists, animals, and pedestrians that may potentially come into the path of our cars at night. This is something I like and once my 2012 is paid off in 2015, who knows I may just take the plunge!??
