Buy an F10?
Looking to get rid of my '07 335i and possibly get an F10. I have some questions though.
I'm really tired of the upkeep; replacing oil related gaskets (filter housing, oil pan gasket, vcg), hpfp, water pump, vanos...etc. Does the '11 or newer N55 have all these same issues? I've searched this forum and others and all the posts are old. No one had more than 5k mi on their N55. Lots of discussions on the differences/similarities in the 2 engines but no longevity issues. I love driving my 335i, fit and finish are great, I'm just sick of $30 part failures needing $1000's to fix. Most of which I end up fixing myself, it just seems to never end. So back to my earlier question, will I have the same upkeep on a '11-14 535i? I really love the F10 with M-Sport package super sexy!

General answer is "yes buy it, it's incredible vehicle".
Just not as fast and nimble as what you have now, but that is pretty obvious given size and weight. These cars are not cheap to maintain and repair though. Not much will change comparing to what you've been dealing with in terms of cost. I personally wouldn't dare buying one that's not CPO. |

Ive only had mine for a month but I really like it. Its completely different from a 335 and of course I would suggest a CPO with any BMW.
First thing that came to mind with the F10 crowd is that people with F10's arent modifying there cars as hard. You dont see many people installing BOVs, meth kits or FMIC's here. For the most part they are family cars and modified a lot more subtle therefore you have less issues due to over modification. Im sure the issue is there just on a much smaller scale. Just my 2 cent. |

Which is where I am at as well. I need more space than the 335i provides. I started down the mod path, but couldn't support mods with the repair costs. LOL I have upgraded everything I've replace, but had no intentions of doing meth kits, DP's, BOV's.
The most i'd be looking for, mod'wise, would be cold air kit (just for the sound) and maybe a tuner (if the benefit offsets the costs), that's all. The rest would be cosmetic.

Just got my 2011 CPO f10. Emailed BMS and Alex responded saying the stage 2 makes 10-15 hp less then jb4 for 335. Definitely not a rocket ship like my retired e90, but it's not slow by any means.
The 535 is aesthetically more pleasing and mature big-boy car.

You'll be happy with the 5 series! Simple upgrades like a tune are sufficient. As u notice most people here will do more cosmetic features as it makes the 5 series more sporty and clean looking. Example comparing a stock and a modified F10

My 335 hasn't been modded beyond a JB+ and CAI. I'm just curious if I get a 2011-12 535i will I still have waterpumps crapping out @ 50k mi, all the gaskets related to engine oil leaking at the same time, vanos replacement every 50k mi, rattling/failing wastegates.... ??

I did have a vanos recall on mine So u might want to see if yours has been done. So far no issues with mine except these awful RFT's!
Sounds like from the threads posted most 3 series guys switching to a 5 series are happy. |

Make sure you do a test drive that really notices how the car handles. I did test drive mine but it wasn't long enough. Later I wish I hadn't bought my 2012 M Sport 535i. The car just doesn't handle like my E90 nor my E60. In fact, I have told many that my F10 drives like a Buick and I'm not exaggerating. I am so disappointed.
As you have already noticed, I am in the minority on this forum.

The 2012 M Sport package is mostly cosmetic. It doesn't even have ARS. There is a huge difference in handling if your vehicle is equipped with ARS. You also had the Xdrive which has the softest(base) suspension. You should've done your research and ticked the right box on the options list. You simply bought the wrong configuration. |

I have a base model 5 though it does not look like the from my pics. I too came from an e90 m sport package and felt the difference in handling immediately. Still purchased it for reasons other than sport. Continued driving made me want my sport back so I purchased the bmw sway bar upgrade kit from ECS. Haven't installed that yet so we'll see where that goes. Probably end up buying non-RFT and Koni FSD's, but we'll see.
There is a way to get this big buffalo moving. Check my previous posts. I beta tested the GSR tune and OMFG I got the equivalent of my tuned 335 back!

Now I'll ask the question I have asked several times, but got not answer yet. What current car besides Audi A6 which comes very close in my opinion, same size/class, same price range handles better ? |

If i needed a sedan, i would get the F10 535 with M sport package so my answer is yes buy it.
Like any other BMW there will be some maintenance to do but it is definitely worth it.

Does the 535i handle better than the new Mazda 6 and the Honda Accord? I am not trolling here. Those cars have about the same interior space as the 5 series (though they weigh less), so I am wondering if the driving dynamics in the 5 are at least superior to the cheap mid size sedans.
