BMW Apps -- have they been abandoned?
I've found the BMW apps to be a big disappointment -- both in terms of the execution of the existing apps, as well as the complete lack of new and/or upgraded apps. It really seems like BMW decided to abandon the whole project. Looking at what other manufacturers are doing in this regard (Toyota and Ford, to name a couple), it would seem BMW is falling way behind the curve.
Has anyone heard anything about if BMW is actually planning in improving their app selection? The whole point of embracing the concept of apps is the allow for more frequent enhancement and customization of the infotainment system. Prior to this, if you wanted updates and added functionality to onboard information and entertainment services, you had to wait until you got a new car. C'mon, BMW get back on the cutting edge with this and update your apps!

I agree, this option and the Internet option are the only ones I feel were a complete waste of money. Internet in the car is so slow it's useless, and the development of new apps is non-existent! Too bad that a company like BMW with hi-tech focus can't do better than this 2012...

The Slow internet is one of the reasons I would like to get the data via bluetooth working (see other threads) just to see how fast it would be then. In theory you could be getting a much faster data speed. The CIC processor is not fast but using the 3G from your own mobile should make it faster than the 2G speed from the cars built in link.
What has happened to the Android app support promised for the end of 2011 by BMW!! ? |

I have my data transfer through bluetooth from my iPhone4. It's not super speedy but on par with Internet access on the iPhone. It's just a neat toy.

I agree, it is a huge missed opportunity and a tremendous oversight on their part to lag behind on this when others (Like AUDI) are beginning to gain on them in areas (like performance) where BMW has long been dominant.

Post your complaints, concerns and frustration on iTunes under rate/review BMW connected app.
That way it will be in proper public view and it will filter up to the suits at BMW AG. It currently has poor reviews. |

Whatever idiot signed off on canned Tweets and Facebook posts should be fired. It's so stupid that had I not seen it personally I could have never believed it wasn't a joke, and yet it's the foremost ability of the app.
I'm embarrassed just knowing my car has it. |

Hi NAL
Are you saying that it is a special that was coded somehow by bimmer-tech or they retrofitted it for you. I supposedly have the factory option fitted but can't get it to work.!! All I get from the dealer is that you can't use the data from your mobile to feed the internet.!! The car seems to give me the option but it doesn't use it. All the dealer will say is that is normal they are not interested. Thanks |

Looks like Mercedes will leapfrog BMW with their apps if BMW don't get off their backside.

What a disappointment these BMW apps have been. Updating your facebook status while driving? Really? Simple things like better voice integration, maps lookup, and sms support would be more interesting.
The Pandora app is pretty nice, but then it's sometimes awkward to start, and the app must be in the foreground on the phone at all times to work or the music stops. That limitation alone limits the system quite a bit since it prevents multiple services to be running in the background and interact with the car interface. At least you get the Pandora app - no such luck for us in the UK.
And what has happened to the Android Apps that BMW promised for the end of 2011 its March 2012 now. Come on BMW either get on a do as promised or release the info to allow others to do it !! |

All the finest engineering of the BMW motor itself can be undone for what amounts to be a 25 man hour iPhone application that doesn't work or otherwise fails to solve the problem for consumers. BMW does not need to spend oodles of engineering hours making iPhone apps for idrive. Rather, BMW just needs to make the iPhone work seamlessly with iDrive. The apps are already out there and they work fine. Just find a way so when I click on idrive that I can see and control my iPhone screen on my idrive screen. Then all my apps will work in my car. No need for BMW to write half baked apps. "IT'S THE INTERFACE STUPID." |

I think we got two different BMW apps in our cars here..
The actual BMW App from iTunes, not much there, except the web radio gets very high marks from people. However, sign up for Pandora or MOG and forget about ever purchasing a CD/iTunes song again. Any song you want. In fact, as I drove my coworker to the train tonight, I was telling him about an old funny Steve Martin comedy track. Fired up MOG, found Steve Martin, and played it for him on the spot. Best $250 ever spent. Oh and don't forget about the new My BMW remote. Do other makes actually offer all of this? (not being a jerk, just curious).
